The Newell Mirror - Thursday , October 2nd, 1952 - Funeral services for Nels J. Knak, a long-time resident of this community, were held Saturday afternoon, September 27, at Nain Lutheran church with the Rev Ronald Jesperson officiating. Pall bearers were Mrs Clarence Bodholdt, Mr Albert Bodholdt, Mr Chris Krog, Mr Dan McNab, Mr August Thompson, and Mr Halvor Bak. Interment was in the Newell cemetery. Niels Jansen Knack was born on September 18, 1872 in Loit Kirkeby Schleswig, just south of Jutland, Denmark and died Sept. 24, 1952 at Oakdale, IA at the age of 80 years and 6 days. In 1887 he was confirmed in the Lutheran church on Denmark and the following year, at the age of 16, he came to the US together with a young friend, Iver Nelson. Niels Kanack first worked in the vicinity of Newell, IA before going to California where he worked on a dairy farm. On March 6, 1869 he was united in marriage to Olen a Rasmussen at the farm home of her parents, a few miles south of Newell. To them were born four children: a daughter who died in infancy, and three sons, Chris, Adolph and Elvin. In 1941 Mr and Mrs. Knack left the farm and moved to Newell, The couple were permitted to celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary in March of 1951, together with their children and grandchildren. The following September Mr Knack went to Oakdale to receive medical treatment at the State Sanitarium. Just this past month he was permitted to spend a week visiting in the home of his sons. The news of his sudden passing on Sept. 24 came as a surprise to his family and friends. Mrs. Knack died last December. Remaining are his sons, Chris of Varina, and Adolph and Elvin of Newell; and three granddaughters, LeDonna, Connie and Janet as well as many friends. Mr. Knack had many neighbors and friends because he was a neighbor and friend. During his year at Oakdale he won the regard of many workers and patients who affectionately called him "Pop." Relatives and friends from out of town who attended the services were: Mr and Mrs Dan McNab, Albert Lee, Minn. ; Mr. and Mrs Ira Smith and sons, Grafton, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Julius Henningson and Loretta, Cedar Falls; Mr. and Mrs C.N. Derby, Cherokee; Mrs Alfred Johnson, Ulmer; Rev. Clifford Ott, Mr. an d Mrs. Ine Krogsted and family, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Hammer and family and Mrs Ott Pudenz of Varina. The Fonda Times - Thursday , October 2nd, 1952 - Mr Chris Knack received word on Wednesday of the death of his father, Nels Knack, at Oakdale. The funeral was held on Saturday afternoon in the Danish church at Newell. Those attending from Varina were Rev. Ott, Ott Pudenz, Mr. and Mrs Wesley Splittgerber, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Hammer and Marilyn, Mr. and Mrs. A.S. Cole, Mr. and Mrs. Ino Krogstad and Eldonna. Oakdale was an unincorporated rural residential village established in 1908 by the State of Iowa as a statewide treatment center for tuberculosis in rural Johnson County, located about five miles northwest of central Iowa City
