B., L.L.B., Vol III, First Edition, Lincoln, Western Publishing & Engraving Company, 1913: NELSON JAMES LUDI, publisher and editor Wahoo Democrat, Wahoo, Neb., was born February 26,1855, at Rock Island, Ill. His father James Ludi, formerly a merchant of Rock Island, Ill., died in 1858, when Nelson was but three years old. His mother, Elizabeth P. Bolles, was killed in a tornado near Republican City, Neb., June 6,1896. Mr. Ludi was educated in the public schools of Rock Island, Ill., and Davenport, Ia. He earned his first money by carrying papers for the Davenport (Ia.) Democrat. After he left school, which was before graduation, he worked on a farm for four years, and then entered the office of the Burlington (Ia.) Gazette to learn the printer's trade. He later served in the business office in charge of the subscription department, and took occasion assignments in reporting. In 1876, he went to Orion, Ill., and in June of that year bought the Orion Times, in partnership with his uncle, William A. Bolles, who still publishes the paper. He later bought his uncle's interest, and conducted the business individually until March, 1883, when he sold the plant and shipped it to Greenfield, Ill., and himself to Aberdeen, S.D., with the intention of homesteading. This sort of life did not appear attractive to him, and for a year he took the formanship of the Aberdeen Pioneer. He afterwards spent a year in Minneapolis as "makeup" for the large printing firm of Johnson, Smith & Harrison. From there he went to Greenfield, Ill., and published the Greenfield Union for a year, then the Roadhouse Union. He them removed to Nebraska, settling at Republican City December 26,1885, and started the Harlan County Democrat, which he published continuously until the office was destroyed by fire, on April 29,1902. On June 1,1902, he bought the Wahoo Democrat, and has since been engaged in the publication of that paper. In 1887, Mr. Ludi was admitted to the practice of law in the district court at Alma, Neb., and later was admitted to both the supreme and federal courts. He has always been a democrat in politics, and was elected to the office of supervisor from Republican City township, and served on the county board for four years, an office to which he was re-elected in 1889. He later served as township clerk, member of the school board, president of the village board, justice of the peace, and other minor local offices. He is a past master in the Masonic Lodge, and a member of the Royal Arch Masons. Mr. Ludi was married June 26, 1879, to Miss Lillian M. Easton. They have eight living children: Myrtle E., now Mrs. Woolman; Bessie M., Raymond N., Ernest J., Belle L., Harry J., Nellie V., and Guy T. **************** Y-DNA testing by two direct male descendants had lead to the possibility that he may, in fact, be a natural son of either William Barnard Avery, or even William's younger brother Amos. It should be noted that his mother married James Ludi, as listed in the article above, on Sep 11,1854 at Rock Island,IL, just five months before Nelson's birth. It is conceivable that James was not Nelson's biological father. ****************
