Nelson Thomas was a 35 year-old Farmer from Middleboro, MA, when he enlisted at Carver, MA on Dec. 14, 1861, being recruited by Capt. William S. McFarlin, and was mustered into the 18th Mass. Infantry on Jan. 14, 1862 as a Private in Co. C. Nelson was engaged with the Regiment in 1862 in the Peninsula Campaign, including the Siege of Yorktown. He became ill with the mumps on or about June 25, 1862, while the Regiment was encamped at Gaines Mills, VA and was admitted to the General Hospital at Ft. Monroe, VA on June 30, 1862. He was returned to duty on Oct. 2, 1862, rejoining the Regiment at Sharpsburg, MD. Nelson was further engaged with the Regiment on Dec. 13, 1862 at the Battle of Fredericksburg. He was admitted to the 5th Corps, 1st Division Hospital at Falmouth, VA on April 27, 1863 due to chronic diarrhea and transferred to Harewood Gen. Hospital, Washington for convalescence on June 14th. He was granted a furlough home on August 10, 1863 and was discharged due to disability, caused by chronic diarrhea and hepatitis, at Boston, MA on Sept. 9, 1863.
