Saturday, Oct. 22, being the 80th birthday anniversary for Newton Harris, 403 W. Van Buren street, his wife invited the children with their families and a few other relatives to help celebrate the occasion. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. D. T. Harris and children, Mr. and Mrs. Homer McCarty and children form Drakesville, Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Harris and son Tom, Mr. and Mrs. Homer Long and children, Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Harris and children, Miss Hazel Harris, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kingsbury and Mrs. Christiania Gilbert from Fairfield, a niece of Mr. Harris and seventy-seven years old; also Samuel Gilbert and little daughter of Fairfield. An elaborate dinner was served at the noon hour that all enjoyed very much. The afternoon was spent in visiting and a short program, consisting of songs, recitations and speeches was rendered. Mr. Harris and Mr. Kingsbury told of the pioneer days when the Indians were plentiful here, and of the growth and progress of this state. The Fairfield relatives remained until Sunday afternoon, the others departing at a late hour, wishing Mr. Harris many more happy birthdays. __________________________________________________________ Centerville Daily Iowegian and Citizen Oct. 27, 1921 Newton Harris, who celebrated his 80th birthday anniversary Saturday, came to Appanoose county in 1857 from Jefferson county, this state where be was born in 1841. The article in Tuesday's paper gave the date of his coming here as 1867, which was ten years loo late. * His first wife was Sarah C. McNeff on Jan. 17, 1867 in Appanoose, Iowa. Mrs. Newton Harris died at her home near Walnut City, Iowa, Friday night of last week. She had been sick for a few days and the news of her death came as quite a shock to her many friends. Funeral services were held in the Christian Church Walnut City, Iowa, on Sunday at 10 a.m. and the remains interred in Shaffer cemetery north of Walnut City. Iowa-Mystic Letter. Ninth. Rev. J. A. Glendinning, pastor of the Methodist church, performed the ceremony. Alfred Trembly, son of Mrs. Trembly, and Mrs. Blackmore, niece of Mr. Harris, were present Mrs. Trembly has a large acquaintance In Centerville, where she has been active In many public matters. Mr. Harris is one of the most extensive land owners in the county, previously being a big stock raiser and dealer. He has lived in Centerville several years. They will make their home in Wentworth addition in the home recently purchased of J. B. Bruckshaw, which has been remodeled. Last night a large number of Rebekahs called to charivari the couple and were given a nice treat.
