Man The body of an unknown man found in Sylvan Slough near the Rock Island Arsenal Sunday morning has been identified as that of Newton R. Sargent, 75, wealthy resident of Manchester, Ia. The corpse was discovered on a sand bar opposite the Rock Island water works by a fisherman Sunday morning. It was weighted down with bricks tied to pieces of string held between the teeth, which at first led to the theory of suicide. The coroner, however, has recommended an investigation, believing that Sargent was the victim of foul play. His right temple was discolored as if from a bruise. The coorner's jury returned a verdict of death from unknown causes. He was last seen in Marion, Ia., last Thursday while visiting at the home of his nephew, A.G. Vaughn, who identigfied the body. At that time he was in good spirits according to Vaughn, who also said that he knew of no reason to support the suicide theory. He was well off financially and enjoyed good health. When he left his nephew's home at Marion, he is believed to have had considerable money on his person and was wearing a valuable diamond stick pin. Sargent's body was found in the Mississippi River near Rock Island last week. Black Hawk District Court then appointed Lois Sargent of 703 Fletcher Street as administratrix of the estate. Mr. Sargent's surviving sister Serene E. Vaughn then filed a petitition asking that the appointment be revoked and nullified as illegal. The petition stated the woman appointed administratrix was not the widow of Newton Sargent and her true name is Marjorie Schmidt but she was also known as Marjorie Shoemaker. In her petition for appointment as administratrix, Mrs. Sargent claimed to have lived wife Sargent as his wife for more than a year, estabishing her claim as widow under common law. Meanwhile, Mrs. Vaughn's son A.G. Vaughn was appointed administrator in Independence and posted a $1000 bond.
