Lappe, 100 A Mass of Christian Burial for Nicholas "Nick" E. Lappe of Jackson took place June 19 at Holy Spirit Church in Carroll, Iowa, with the Rev. Timothy Johnson as celebrant and the Rev. Tim Boekelman as concelebrant. Burial was at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Carroll, Iowa. Nick Lappe died at his home on June 13. Casket bearers were Nick's grandchildren. Music was provided by Barb McDermott, organist; and the Holy Spirit Choir. Mass was served by the Holy Spirit Parish. The Ohde Funeral Home of Manning, Iowa handled the arrangements. Nicholas Edward, son of J.J. and Margaret (Flies) Lappe was born April 5, 1913 near Carroll, Iowa. He attended Sts. Peter and Paul parochial school thru the eighth grade. He then spent two years at Columbia School in Dubuque, Iowa before graduating from Carroll High School in 1930. After the death of his father who was in his 40s, Nick lived in town with his mother and siblings. After graduation, Nick worked for an interior decorating firm that specialized in church interiors. After two years he moved to California to follow his sweetheart and worked in church interior design there. On Oct. 27, 1937 Nick was united in marriage with Frances Margaret Conner in Palo Alto, Calif. As World War II escalated and safety on the west coast became questionable, Nick and Frances moved back to Iowa. They farmed for a total of 45 years, first near Carroll on the family farm and then near Creston for a number of years. They were the parents of six children. Nick enjoyed music and taught himself to play the keyboard and sang for many years in the Elks Club Chorus. In his spare time and retirement, he enjoyed raising roses, golfing, hunting, and playing cards, games and chess with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. When it became difficult for Nick to care for his wife as her health declined, they moved to Jackson, in 1994 to be nearer their sons. Frances died on Sept. 27, 1995 and Nick continued to live independently in his own home. With the help of his family he was able to remain at home as his health declined. His mind remained sharp till the end. Nick is survived by his sons Gary (Colleen) Lappe of Lodi, Calif., Robert (Joan) Lappe of Council Bluffs, Iowa, David (Donna) Lappe of Lakefield, Mark (Kari) Lappe of Columbia Heights; daughter-in-law Karen Lappe of Marshfield, Wis.; 15 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; sister-in-law Ernestine Lappe of Carroll, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Preceding him in death are his wife Frances Lappe, daughter Gail Lappe at two years of age, son Richard Lappe, siblings Susan Nelson, Florence Lappe, Irene Curran and Anthony Lappe. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
