Nicholas Farr was the son of Watis Farr and Nancy Gallmon Farr. In 1853, he married Harriet Cole. They had 5 children: Rosanna Lucy Ann, John Henry Watis, Robert David, Frank Smith and Nancy A.

Nicholas Farr enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1861. He was a private in the 15th Regiment, South Carolina Infantry. He died of injuries/illness in a Virginia Military Hospital on May 24, 1864.
