Funeral mass will be on Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at the Holy Name Catholic Church with Father John Lantsberger officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Watertown, SD. Ries was born on June 23, 1923 to Nick J. and Mary (DeVille) Ries in Rome Township, Deuel County, Goodwin, South Dakota. He attended grade school District #35 in Codington County and Holy Rosary School in Kranzburg. He started farming with his dad and this continued until 1953 when he and Theresa Grygiel were married on October 28, 1953 at Immaculate Conception Church in Watertown by Monsignor J.P. Vesser. They began their married life on the same farm he was born on. Nick and Theresa purchased the farm in 1966 and lived there until July of 1991, when they retired and moved into Watertown and had a day care in their home for the next eight years. Theresa passed away on November 11, 2009. Nicholas was a township officer, a 67 year member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and a church usher of 40 years at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Kranzburg. He was currently a member of Holy Name Catholic Church in Watertown. He enjoyed watching baseball and The Young and The Restless on TV. He also liked spending time with his grandsons and making things for them out of wood and doing word finds. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Theresa; his daughter, Mary; two sisters; and one brother. He is survived by his son, Mark (Ann) Ries; his daughter, Melissa Ries; and his sisters, Rita Moes,Therese Raml and Rosemary Pickering; five sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law, Marie (Jerome) Mack, Lou Darrington, Fran (Paul) Korbel, Betty Hanten and Lois Grygiel; and four grandsons.
