Had a sawmill and gristmill in 1806. Gave each child a farm of about 160 acres from his large tract. (Wenger says he acquired from the "government, in John FQ Adams' administration, sixteen sections of wild timberland, equal to 10,240 acres, on Raccoon Creek, in Fairfield Co., not far from Bremen, upon which he built a cabin, sawmill, and flouring mill. These sixteen sections of land were equal to his sixteen children.) • 1834 Christian and his son George founded the town of Bremen in Rush Creek Twp. Fairfield Co. Ohio • Farmer. Mennonite. • d. Feb 16, 1812 or 1811 in Fairfield County, Ohio. Buried in the Huddle or Mt. Zion cemetery 2 mi SE of Berne on Houch Road. Wenger says "died Feb 16, 1811 and is buried in the Miller Cemetery, about one mile southeast of Berne Station, near Lancaster, Fairfield County, Ohio. Stone reads "Nicholas Beery / died February 16 181? / aged 72 years 11 months" Children: 16 in all. First, had 12 children with Mary Keller. Joseph Hite ------------------------------------------------- BIRTH, DEATH & AGE - Different places were found notated as Nicholas II's birth place. NOTE FROM J. SMITH: The 'brown' picture is the best for most of the inscription, but the 'gray' picture makes the '72' very clear in the age. The most ambiguous is the '11' in the yr of death. The secondary source "History of the Descendants of Nicholas Beery" by Wenger p. 15-19 (http://www.archive.org/details/historyofdescend00weng) confirms the year as 1811, but contains a copy the will of Nicholas dated 15 May 1811 (which can't exactly be written by a man that died in February!). Wenger doesn't make it clear where he gets his stated birth date (which would require an age of 71Y 8M), and I think every other place that uses '16 Jun 1739' relies on him. If we use Wenger's DOB and the age on the inscription, we get a DOD of 16 May 1812, suspiciously similar to that date on the will. I would imagine Wenger, though based in Iowa, would have access to a headstone far less worn than we have; so I don't know the reasoning behind the dates he published and the obvious conflict there. I can only think that getting access to the original text of Nicholas's will can clear some of this up (e.g. maybe Wenger misread the date, maybe the date is when it was proved, maybe the date is as written and the stone was engraved incorrectly.)
