Auburn Cemetery for Nicholas.* However, "The Population History of England, 1541-1871," indicate baptisms in the 16th and 17th centuries were held on the first Sunday or Holy Day after birth and rarely later than eight days after birth.[ii] Thus, it is most likely Nicholas was born mid-January near the end of 1600 (since January is the 11th month of the Julian calendar). Also verifying that Nicholas was born circa 1600, is his oath taken in court at Cambridge on 04 Apr 1671. He said, "I Nicholas Withe aged about 70 years do testifie ye survey..."[iii] Nicholas married Margaret Clark, probably at Westhorpe, Suffolk, England, around 1630. They had a daughter, Sarah, and two sons. Both sons were babies when they died and were buried at All Saints Church in Saxtead in 1637 and 1638. This means Nicholas and his family emigrated to New England, possibly as early as 1638, but it is more likely he arrived in America in 1644. In January of 1644, Nicholas gave a confession to join the church in Cambridge. In it, Nicholas gave an accounting of his masonry training and his church activities before coming to the Massachusetts Bay Colony. If the ages in the testimony are added together, he was in old England until approximately age 44.* Some suggest Nicholas Wyeth may have first settled in Watertown. That is unlikely since he does not appear on Watertown's land inventory records of 1634, 1635 or 1639.[iv]* In his testimony, Nicholas also said ".... the Lord took away my son and when we came here the Lord raised up my wife." This would indicate Margaret died in America. Nicholas bought a house and land on the west side of Garden Street in Cambridge in 1645. It remained in his family for more than two hundred years. About 1647, Nicholas married Rebecca, the widow of Thomas Andrews. "U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900," from Rebecca's marriage in 1641 to Thomas Andrews, indicate her maiden name was "Parks." Some erroneously believe Rebecca Parks Andrews' maiden name was Craddock because of a petition Thomas Andrews, the husband of Damaris Craddock, joined in with a Mrs. Rebecca Craddock in 1648. That Mrs. Rebecca Craddock was the widow of Matthew Craddock and was stepmother to Damaris Craddock. When that Thomas Andrews died in England, Damaris married Rev. Cudworth.* The names of seven children are listed in the "Massachusetts, Town and Vital Records" of Cambridge for Nicholas and Rebecca.* Five lived to adulthood. Nicholas died July 19, 1680 and rests in the Old Burying Ground of Cambridge on Massachusetts Avenue at Harvard Square in his granddaughter Deborah Wyeth Gamage's family tomb.[v]* After Nicholas' death, his widow Rebecca then married Thomas Fox. She died in 1698, probably in May.
