He died on May 4, 1955 in Saratoga, Santa Clara County, CA. Nick was married to Belle, divorced, married to Eva and had 2 daughters, Estelle and Marian, and divorced Eva, but then married Annie. Nick's daughters each had two children. Nick was a colorful character. Sandy remembers him when she was a little girl. He had a monkey and he would bring the money with him when he would come to their house. Nick died when he was at work. The brakes on the dump truck he was driving went out and the truck he went up an embankment. He was thrown out and the dump truck rolled back down the hill and crushed him. His funeral was held in San Francisco, CA. He is buried at the Russian cemetery. He was married to Annie at the time of his death. For some reason, Nick changed his name from Klistoff to Histov. As told by Nick's brother al: Nick served in the United States Army in World War II. He was drafted in 1941, took his basic training in Fort Ord, CA, near Monterey. He then left from San Francisco Pier 38 on a ship that had bunk beds 15 high. The men had to climb up the bunks to get to their spot. In each "hole" there were about 800 men with a total of about 6,000 men on board. They ate in a continuous line and were guaranteed one meal a day. If they stayed in line, they got 2. Nick didn't fight in the war. He was in the Pacific Theater in 4 or 5 places. Okinawa and maybe Guadacanal, Midway, etc. He was a grader operator making and repairing airports. While he was there, he was a Sargeant. Every time he got a leave, he'd get drunk. Then he'd be a private. Then he'd do well and they'd make him a Sargeant again. That recycled many times. One time he had a leave and he went to town and got into trouble. He was put in the brig, which was a yard. The guy in charge was a friend of his, and Nick asked him if he could go to town to get cigarettes and booze. The guy, naturally, said no, but Nick pestered him for a couple of hours. Finally Nick said, "i just want cigarettes," and the guard said, "OK" and let hi go. Nick went into town and went to a bar. He was drinking "Tubaluba". Nick thought it was something like apple juice, but it was pure alcohol. After drinking it, you drink water and get drunk again. He was there for a week when he finally hired a "taxi" to take him back to the army base. The "taxi" turned out to be a water buffalo with a man carrying a stick. When he got to the base, the soldiers were having inspection. The highest officer asked "Who is coming?" Another replied, "One of your men, sir". Just about that time, Nick hollered to the man, "Come on, hit this beast! Can't you see that the general is waiting." Nick was immediately back in the brig again. Another time, Nick was working on a runway about a mile away from the barracks. Japanese planes were spotted flying right to them. He dove under his grade and very quickly the Japanese destroyed it, but he was OK. He walked back the mile or so. At the end of his service, he was preparing to come home and was out with a bunch of soldiers. He found a baby monkey whose mother had been killed. The baby was still on the back of its mother. Nick took it and got permission to bring it home. He got the monkey all its necessary shots and put it in a cage. HEADLINE Own Truck Runs Over, Kills Man Nick J. Histov, 45, of Saratoga, was run over and killed by his own dump truck in a freak accident near Campbell yesterday. Highway patrolmen said Histov's truck failed to round a curve while apparently traveling at high speed on San Jose-Los Gatos road near Dry Creek road about 8:30 a.m. The truck struck a steep bank, hurling Histov out the door on the driver's side. Patrolmen said the truck started to climb the bank, and Histov fell under the left rear dual wheels. The truck came to rest with the weight of its left rear side on Histov's body. Patrolmen said the door's latch appeared faulty. Histov was dead on arrival at County Hospital. His body was taken to San Francisco, where funeral arrangements are pending.
