Nick passed away September 30th at Avera Prince of Peace Retirement Community. Nick Star was born on a farm in Douglass County on January 6, 1913 to Ring and Katie (Muilenberg) Star. He was the 4th youngest of 11 children and was only 4 years old when his mother died so his father was left to raise a large family. On November 28, 1934 Nick married Evelyn Grond. After farming for several years in the Corsica area, Nick became manager and operated the gas truck for the Corsica Co-op. In 1947 Nick bought the Texaco bulk oil station in Corsica. After selling the Texaco bulk business, he worked as a parts man for John Deere Implement in Corsica. When Evelyn began to lose her eyesight, they moved to Sioux Falls in 1965 to be near their children. In Sioux Falls Nick worked for Du-al Manufacturing, the SD State Highway Dept., Sioux Road Equipment Co. and the Minnehaha County Extension office. Nick was a loving care giver to Evelyn until she passed away in December of 2004 (just after they had celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.) Living through the depression gave Nick an inventive resourcefulness, never wasting and always fixing things. Since he had only an 8th grade education, his wish was that his grandchildren would graduate from college and because of his and Evelyn's encouragement and support, this wish was fulfilled. At different stages in his life, Nick enjoyed gardening, bowling, a yearly West River deer hunting trip and golfing. He was so proud of the fact that he was given a free golf membership at the age of 85 and he put it to good use often times golfing 5 mornings a week. He looked forward to getting together with his Saturday morning coffee buddies at HyVee. Thanks to rides furnished by his friends Bert Vandenwolde and Father Donald Molumby, he was able to continue this tradition after having to give up driving. He loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed going with them to Arby's for coffee and a turnover. He was quiet a man of patience, concern for others and a deep spiritual faith. Sunday mornings he would get up early, dress up in a suit and be ready for the dedicated group of First Christian Reformed Church members who faithfully took turns providing rides for him to church. He was currently the oldest living member of the church. He was preceded in death by his wife, one daughter Carol Jean at birth, one brother and 7 sisters. -Obituary from George Boom Funeral Home
