Blankenship in the city and county will be pained to learn of his death, which took place at the family home, near Chicago Mound, Saturday evening at 9 o'clock, after a long and painful illness with dropsy. He leaves a wife and one son at home and three daughters in Colorado. The deceased has long been identified with the best interests of the county which he adopted as his home, coming to this place from Kentucky. He was 76 years of age and bore the distinguished honor of serving in the Mexican war, and also in the late war. At one time in the early history of Emporia, he was city marshal, and in this as in all other walks of life, he was earnest and devoted to his work, and performed the duties devolving upon him without fear and favor. He was an active member of the Chicago Mound M.E. church. By his death Lyon county loses one of her oldest residents, the community a respected citizen and an honest man and only those who have lost such a husband and father from the family circle can realize the poignant grief of the bereaved family. The truest sympathy of the hosts of friends goes out to them in this hour of death. Yet his friends realize earthly power cannot allay the grief, and commend the sorrowing family to the God from whom the deceased received inspiration and love for the teachings if the divine spirit. Post 464, G.A.R. in this city took charge of the remains, and with Rev. F.M. Chaffee, conducted the funeral services Monday at the country home, after which the remains were placed in the city of the dead, near the M.E. church of that vicinity, by the side of neighbors, young and old, who have gone before. Same edition of the Weekly Republican, p. 4, c. 5 Mustered Out. The funeral of N.M. Blankenship was largely attended at 1 o'clock Monday Feb. 8th, at the Junction school house. Notwithstanding the roads being in a very bad condition the house was filled to overflowing, many being obliged to stand during the services. By special request of the deceased Commander Mellon with a detachment from Hancock Post No. 464, Emporia, Kan., were in attendance and took part in the funeral obsequies. After an appropriate song by the choir, which was led by Miss Mary J. Vangundy at the organ, prayer was offered by Capt. Irwin, chaplain of the post. Then followed the reading of the scripture lesson, found in II Timothy I, 10, and Acts xxvi, 8, by Rev. F.M. Chaffee of Chicago Mound. The theme of the discourse was upon the resurrection, and it was pronounced a very able and logical presentation of the subject. At the close of Rev. Chaffee's discourse, Mr. C.R. Stone read the following biographical sketch of the deceased, which he had prepared for the occasion: Noah M. Blankenship was born into this life in Pulaski county, Ky., May 6, 1827, unto the higher life February 6, 1892; had he lived ninety days longer, he would have been 65 years of age. His father, James W. Blankenship, was a Baptist preacher, whose characteristics of sociability and energy with an unyielding adherence to his convictions were transmitted to the subject of this notice. Early in life he yielded obedience to the gospel under his father's preaching and united with the Baptist church, where he was born and reared to manhood. With the spirit of patriotism which characterized his ancestry in all of the wars from the revolutionary in 1776 to our rebellion of 1861 we find the name of Noah M. Blankenship, a beardless boy of 19 enrolled in Company A, 1st regiment of Kentucky infantry, and commanded by Col. Henry Clay, on to Mexico, standing six feet two, and well proportioned; we find him on the right of the company, every inch a military hero. Do you ask me in what battles he fought? Turn to your histories, read of Polo Alto and Rasawka de la Palma, Matamoras, Monterey Bwa-na Vis-ta Cha-pool-ta-pek – in fact every battle of note fought in old Mexico from first to last. After serving out his enlistment under Clay, he veternized at Brazos bay receiving $100 in gold. Then enlisted in the 13th marine regiment under Gen. Winfield Scott, and was transferred to the 4th Kentucky volunteer infantry, under Col Williams, and served to the close of the war with Mexico, in 1848. While in that tropical climate he had typhoid fever and chronic diarrhea, which nearly cost him his life. Nothing but his large vitativeness and will power carried him through. After the war he returned to his native state, and in 1856 was married to Luhama Miller, of the same county in which he was born. From this union they were blessed with three children, two sons, James D. and Noah P., now living in Garrett, Ill.; their daughter, Susan, died in Emporia, Kan., in 1883, aged 17 years. He was residing in Kentucky when the rebellion broke out. The majority of his neighbors went with the confederacy, but the spirit of loyalty to the memory of his ancestry and his love for the old flag, with its stars and stripes, made him a target for the hatred they bore to any who loved the Union; but the threats of death by rope or bullet did not intimidate him nor prevent him from speaking his love for the Union and hatred for secession. In 1862 he enlisted for one year in the 8th Kentucky cavalry, commended by Col. James M. Shackleford, and was mustered out at the expiration of his time, after which he was appointed on Col Shackleford's staff, where he remained until 1865, when he resigned and came home on account of the severe illness and expected death of his wife, who, however, lingered with consumption until 1870, when she died and now rests beside her daughter in Maplewood cemetery, Emporia. On November 23, 1871, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Caroline D. Henley, his present widow, to whom was born one son, George F., now residing with his bereaved mother; also, two daughters, dying in infancy. While living in Emporia e united with the Christian church, and after moving upon the farm just across the way he took membership with the Protestant Methodist denomination of which he was a member until his final muster out for the church triumphant. He was an active member, when health permitted, of Hancock post 464, G.A.R., Emporia, Kansas. Some days previous to his death he obtained a promise from me to notify the post when death came, and the presence of so many of his comrades on this occasion's tells us the "boys" have not forgotten their follow comrade, who drank from the same canteen in the sixties. Then we wore the blue, now we wear the grey. Our fallen brother always had a warm place in his heart and a friendly hand shake for the old soldier. No deception in Brother Blankenship. The roughest side always out. Let us throw around his memory the mantle of charity, remembering only his virtues, Comrades, turning from the dead, let us adopt as a sister into our fraternal brotherhood, she who has so nobly and self-sacrificing night and day watched at the bedside of her husband, our brother. Then "Twill be sweet as she'll pass down the vista of years, With her heart deeply buried with sorrow and tears, To know that she has brothers on whom to repose, Who will help bear burdens, help share in her woes." After the singing the favorite song of the deceased, "Sweet By and By," the body was taken to Chicago Mound cemetery, where the services were concluded by the G.A.R.'s, when the body was laid away to await the final resurrection.
