Gwin was born Dec. 7th, 1840, in HOlmes Co., Illinois (sic), where he lived until 1850, when he came with his parents to Powshiek (sic) County, Iowa. During the civil war he enlisted in Co. Gwin was born Dec. 7th, 1840, in HOlmes Co., Illinois (sic), where he lived until 1850, when he came with his parents to Powshiek (sic) County, Iowa. During the civil war he enlisted in Co. H, 28th Iowa, at Brooklyn, but was not mustered into service on account of defective eyesight. He was married February 11, 1869, to Miss Rosa Turley. He resided in Powshiek County until February 1st, 1900, when he moved with his family to Victor. He united with the Congregational church of Victor, January, 2nd, 1902. He passed to the higher life on the morning of June (sic) 5th, 1904, leaving a wife, three sons and two daughters. Mr. Gwin possessed those qualities of character which are essential to good American citizenship. He was thrifty and industrious in his own affairs, upright and kind in his dealing with others, patriotic in his attitude toward matters of public interest. It is by such men that the land where we live has been transformed from a howling wilderness to a garden of plenty, that homes have been founded and maintained, which are the source of our nation's strength. We are apt to forget how much we owe to them. This brother had always been a strong, vigorous man until the last four years of his life. He knew some time before his death that he was soon to leave this earth plane. He faced the situation with courage and cheerfulness, bearing with patience the bodily suffering of the later months. He came into the possession of a calm trust in his Heavenly Father's love, which dispelled all fears of the grave, and passed peacefully into a happier life. For him there need be no grief, only rejoicing. His family have the sincere sympathy of their many friends in this bereavement. The funeral services were held at the home on Thursday morning July 7th, at 10:00 o'clock. All the immediate family were at the funeral. A daughter, Mrs. Fudge and her husband came from their home in Oskaloosa and a son, Robert, from Des Moines. Two sons, Elmer and Lawerence (sic), and a daughter, Mrs. Paul Kerr, reside in Victor." In the same newspaper on that date" A PIONEER GONE Although the death of Noah Gwin has been almost hourly expected for ten days past, yet when it was announced it came with a shock to the community. There is a distinct sense of personal loss that comes to every citizen, in the death of such a man. An abiding influence for good has ceased. The forces that make for moral upbuilding are lessened. He had witnessed the building of an empire in this central west, and had builded himself into it. The present establishment of law and order and the industrial, social and moral wealth of this great state are a monument to the sturdy worth of those pioneers, and their deeds shall live after them. The respect in which Mr. Gwin was held among his townspeople was shown by the closing of all business during the funeral services. The community mourns a good citizen and a righteous man."
