Born in Gaffney, she was the widow of William Lewis Mathis and the daughter of the late Wesley Whelchel and Ella Robinson Whelchel. She formerly worked at Peachtree Centre. Mrs. Mathis attended Faith Baptist Church and was a member of Corinth Baptist Church. Surviving is a son, Wayne Earl Rathbone of Gaffney; a daughter, Nettie Porter; a brother, Troy Whelchel of Jonesville; a sister, Sarah Blanton of Gaffney; two grandchildren, Larry Porter and wife, Wendy and Diane Porter; five great-grandchildren, Heather Porter, Steven Porter, Jessica Phillips, Logan Porter and Jake Porter; and a great-great grandchild, Kaden Porter. Mrs. Mathis was preceded in death by two sons, Gene Whelchel and Phillip Rathbone; two brothers; and four sisters. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 19, 2012 at Blakely Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, August 20, 2012 in the Blakely Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Delos Blanton, Rev. Mickey Mullinax and Mr. Ashby Blakely officiating.
