Description	:	Noland Kenneth Stroop, 82, born Aug. 20, 1927, passed away Friday morning after a long and courageous battle with leukemia. Noland proudly served two years in the Army. Upon discharge from the service, he went to work alongside his father at Loewner's Monument. He also worked at James H. Bryan Memorials and Heritage Memorials. Read More	Noland Kenneth Stroop, 82, born Aug. 20, 1927, passed away Friday morning after a long and courageous battle with leukemia. Noland proudly served two years in the Army. Upon discharge from the service, he went to work alongside his father at Loewner's Monument. He also worked at James H. Bryan Memorials and Heritage Memorials. Noland loved the outdoors and country music. His father, Emory, was a banjo picker, fiddler, and comedian on the local radio. He and his father designed and sandblasted many of the tombstones in the local cemeteries. Noland loved fishing and hunting with his nephews. He especially enjoyed fishing with his brother, Bunny, after retirement until walking a lot became difficult. He loved going to Charlie Ward's house to play music with his friends and nephew, Gary. In later years, he played music at a local business with his nephews, Carlton, and Gary, brother, Bunny, and friends. He enjoyed spending time with his daughters and their families on Sundays for lunch. Over the past three years, he occupied his time by painting advanced paint by number sets, which he shared with his family and friends. Noland was the son of the late Emory Russell and Lena Virginia McCary Stroop. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Charles Russell Stroop, and one sister, Clara Stroop Higgs. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Helen Fravel Stroop, whom he married on Oct. 2, 1948. He is also survived by two daughters, Brenda Diane McKinnie and husband, James, of Stokesdale, N.C., and Karen Stroop Armentrout and husband, Montie, of Harrisonburg; one brother, Sylvester Biedler "Bunny" Stroop of Penn Laird; a brother-in-law, Robert Hank Fravel and wife, Betty, and a sister-in-law, Sally Fravel, all of Harrisonburg; two grandsons, Heath and Nathan McKinnie; one granddaughter, Kristi Armentrout; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg at 7 p.m. Monday, March 29, 2010, with Pastor Sonny Henkle officiating. There will be a private graveside service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rockingham Memorial Hospital Cancer Center, 100 E. Grace St., Harrisonburg, VA 22801, or to the Harrisonburg Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1477, Harrisonburg, VA 22801.
