Nora Alice Cozad married Bert Marion Overturf on March 10, 1904, in Wapello County, Iowa. According to the marriage record, Nora was born in Centerville, Iowa, and she was the daughter of Enoch J. and Margaret (McGuffey) Cozad. Please Note: Nora's obituary, which I have transcribed below was printed in the name of Norah Overturf. It was published on August 3, 1905, and stated that she, "passed away last night." The date of death on Nora's gravestone is August 1, 1905. Many of these obituaries published in the "Ottumwa Tri-Weekly Courier," and "Ottumwa Semi-Weekly Courier," were reprinted word for word from previous daily papers, making it appear that their date of death is wrong on their gravestones. Adding to the confusion is the fact that Nora's death in the Iowa U.S. Cemetery Records in ancestry.com was given as August 24, 1905, and that is also the date given in the WPA readings of the cemetery. That date of death is clearly incorrect. I have transcribed the obituary as written. --------------- Obituary From "Ottumwa Tri-Weekly Courier," Thursday, August 3, 1905, Page 8: YOUNG WOMAN DIES MRS. NORAH OVERTURF, 203 SOUTH MOORE STREET, SUCCUMBED LAST NIGHT. Deceased was 24 Years Old and a Highly Esteemed Woman–Leaves a Husband and One Child [Captions for two other obituaries were also given on this line.] Norah Overturf, wife of B. Overturf, passed away last night at 10:45 o'clock. The deceased was 24 years old and a highly esteemed and respected resident of South Ottumwa. She is survived by a husband and one child. The deceased was formerly Norah Cozad and before her marriage, was bookkeeper for J.A. Phillips. She was a member of Court No. 61, Tribe of Ben Hur, of South Ottumwa. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 1 o'clock from the residence, 203 South Moore street, and at 2 o'clock from the South Ottumwa Baptist church. Rev. John Hastie, the pastor, will conduct the services.
