I remember that during the last war I counted my wealth in candles. Now it is soap and cigars that make me feel well fixed. With these eight bars of soap I could probably hire eight Arabs to work for two days. They don't want to work for money and they will often refuse to sell eggs, fruit, and vegetables for money. A few weeks ago I had an Arab do my washing. He wanted my shoes for pay and for two days he refused to accept my money. I would rather have him continue to go barefooted than to be without shoes myself, so we had a hard time making a trade. I had the advantage because he had already washed my clothes and my French soldiers would probably have shot him had he made any fuss about turning the laundry over to me. The French don't take much back talk from the Arabs. The most ragged Arab probably has a large roll of money but there is almost nothing that he needs for sale in the stores. In fact in the country where I have been since the first of the year the stores sold the last of their goods and closed up two years ago. For nearly a week now I have been loafing and resting in the city where I landed in North Africa. I flew in here from the front expecting to take off at once on a long trip but the trip was postponed for a week and I have been kept here. Since the first of the year I have been a real fighting soldier out at the front again. I had some real mean jobs. I gained a lot of useful experience. I had a lot of scares, a lot of anxious moments, and a lot of fun. I had good luck and didn't lose any ground that I was charged with holding and I was able to gain all of the objectives that were assigned to me. We captured over 500 Germans and Italians besides those we killed and wounded and we captured a lot of guns, ammunition, vehicles, and much needed railroad engines. It is the killed and woundedùboth my own and the enemy'sùthat make me sad. As I look over the wreckage of battle I always ask myself if I could have done it at less cost. I don't even like to kill or wound Germans and Italians. I always try to figure out how I can bag them without hurting themùthat is when war is fun. The country where I have been is a near desert land, not unlike west Texas and Arizona. For a radius of 100 miles there is only one small wooded area. There are a few small oases with date palm trees and there are a few small olive groves. Almost none of the land is cultivated. Large herds of sheep and goats and a few very poor cattle range the plains. All transportation of the natives is by donkeys and camels. Camels are more common than dogs in Arkansas. I have seen caravans including as many as 75 camels. In the days of the Roman Empire there was much more rain in that section and there were vast wheat fields. The land was known as "The Granary of Rome." the miserable little Arab. village where I had my first headquarters was once a Roman city with 200,000 inhabitants. About every 20 miles along every road is the ruin of what was once a prosperous Roman city. It is really remarkable how well preserved many of the ruins are after 2,000 years. Many places every letter of inscriptions cut in stones can still be easily read. The only two baths that I had during January were taken at an old Roman bath house. The tubs are small tile lined rooms about 4 ft by 8 ft with five steps leading down to the floor. The water is piped in from hot mineral water springs. Since I left the U. S. I have traveled so much by air that I feel more at ease in a plane than I do in a car. At the front I had to leave my sedan car and ride in open bantam cars in order that we could keep a closer watch for German planes and so that we could get out faster and run for cover when a plane appeared. The German planes attack single vehicles along the roads. They frequently get the car or truck but if we are fast enough we can usually get far enough from the road to escape injury. The meanest places are where there are mountains near the road. At such places the planes come in from behind thee mountain and are on you before you can get away from your car. I might have kept on riding in my sedan but my drivers became so jittery that I was more afraid of them wrecking me than I was of the German planes. I now have a new assignment. When I return from my trip, my new headquarters will be in a large city back of the front. My work will take me up and down the entire front and will be very interesting. I visited my new place on my way in here. It is swell. I have a very fine headquarters building and I have for my own quarters a five bedroom house taken over with all of its furniture from a wealthy French family. It is the commander-in-chief's house but as he is not located in that city and has never spent a night in the house, I occupy it as his deputy. It has one of the rarest comforts in this land-steam heat.
