Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012 at Christ The King Catholic Church, Webster. Burial will be in St. Otto's Cemetery, Webster. Visitation will be from 5-7 Monday, Sept. 3 at Christ The King Catholic Church, Webster with a Wake Service at 7. Norbert was born Oct. 1, 1921 in Bristol to Barbara (nee Bierschbach) and Peter F. Grode. He grew up on the family farm west of Butler. In 1939 he graduated from Bristol High School where he was active in band, baseball, track, and basketball. He attended S. Dak. School of Mines and later joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. On Sept. 20, 1942 he joined the U.S. Navy and served as an Aviation Radio Technician First Class on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Cowpens in the South Pacific. He was part of the advance group that set up the Japanese surrender. He was honorably discharged Dec. 24th, 1945. Norbert returned to S. Dak. and purchased a farm north of Webster where the family was raised. In addition to farming, he worked at the ASCS office and later as office manager for LREA. He retired as acting manager in 1983. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and served on the Honor Guard. He served as Quartermaster for several years and was on the board of directors for the Golf Club and Sun Dial Manor. He was an avid bowler and served as secretary of the men’s bowling league for 30 years. Since 1949 he was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and served on the COF State Board for 16 years. He was an active member of Christ the King Catholic Church, serving several terms on the Parish Council and as a lector for many years. Norbert’s greatest accomplishment in life was his family. He worked tirelessly to provide a warm loving home. Family vacations were few, but family gatherings with grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins were many. He reared his children with a firm, but generous, hand and gave them a model father to emulate. He is survived by his brothers Jim, Fred, Walt, Ralph, Ray and his sister, Lillian. Norbert was very much loved and will be sorely missed by his six children: Marilyn Couch, Frisco, TX, Tom (Carrie), Copley, OH, Gene (Wendy) Albuquerque, NM, Tim (Susan) Edmund, OK, Nancy Bennett, Frisco, TX and Gloria Lauria, West Chester, PA; his grandchildren; Erin, Leah, Cory, Jeanette, Alexis, Marcus, Justin, Sarah, Jennifer and Christopher, and Greg his three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Norbert was preceded in death by his parents and his loving wife, Lucille.
