"Family was always her number one priority," her daughter, Pat Quist, said. Mrs. Kelly died Friday, April 16, 2010, at Lenoir Nursing Home from Alzheimer's. She was 78. Mrs. Kelly was born March 29, 1932, in Goodell, Iowa, to G. Lawrence and Bridget (Nolan) Smith. She graduated as valedictorian from Britt High School in 1950. She met her husband, Joseph Kelly, before she graduated. He was attending community college, which was located in the high school, after returning from serving in WWII when the two met. They were married on June 19, 1951, and had five children. Quist said she will remember her mother's stories during thunderstorms or tornado warnings. When Mrs. Kelly was a child, a tornado destroyed her family's barn. After several days, they heard a noise and discovered a calf pinned in the rubble. It had deformed legs after the incident, but survived. "I think she told it to reassure us that even though we were under tornado watch and it was spooky out, that even if something did happen to us, we could recover from it," Quist said. The family of seven moved all over the country due to Mr. Kelly's different jobs, but Mrs. Kelly's organizational skills and devotion to learning her way around each new city helped her children adjust each time. "She got to know the neighbors and parents at each school," her daughter, Kathryn Kelly, said. "One of the things she always said was how important it was to know what goes on with your kids," Quist said. "She was always involved with volunteering at our schools." Mrs. Kelly also enjoyed traveling. Through her husband's jobs, she went to places such as Hawaii, Spain, London and Acapulco, Mexico. When it came to family, no distance was too far for Mrs. Kelly. Every summer, she took her children to visit her family in Iowa and continued to travel all over the U.S. when her children dispersed across the country. When one of her sons was married in Africa, she traveled there for the wedding. After researching her and her husband's genealogy back to Ireland, she and her daughter, Mary Shifley, traveled to Ireland and visited places where she had traced her lineage. In addition to strong family values, Mrs. Kelly also passed down her strong devotion to Catholicism, which she called "the family jewels," to her children. "Her faith was one of the most prevalent things in her life. After my dad passed away, it's what kept her going," Quist said. Mrs. Kelly is survived by three daughters, Kathryn Kelly of Washington D.C., Mary Shifley of Columbia, and Pat Quist of Charlotte, N.C.; two sons, Mike Kelly of Louisville, Ky. and Tom Kelly of Baltimore, Md.; three sisters Barb Detrick of Dakota City, Iowa, Helen Sullivan of Orchard, Iowa, and Berniece Seiler of Marshalltown, Iowa; three brothers Chuck Smith of Perry, Iowa, Joe Smith of Ames, Iowa, and Steve Smith of Urbandale, Iowa; twelve grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Her husband died earlier. Mrs. Kelley will be buried alongside her husband where they met and fell in love — Britt, Iowa. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Ewing Funeral Home, 178 Center St W, in Britt, Iowa. Visitation will continue at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 139 Third St. SE, Britt, Iowa. Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at the church.
