Norma Astrid Maria Gaard was born on December 15, 1923 to Ole and Charlotte (Erickson) Gaard at rural Arlington, South Dakota. She grew up and received her education there going to country school and then graduating from Hetland High School in 1943. On September 5, 1944 she was united in marriage to Orlin Brenden at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Upon Orlin’s discharge from the Army, the couple made their home in Sioux Falls. In 1960, the couple moved to Torrance, CA and lived there several years. Norma made a living as a bookkeeper for various businesses as well as being a homemaker; she retired in 1975. In 1978 the couple moved to Willow Lake, SD for a time, returning to Sioux Falls in 1985. After Olin’s death in 1991, Norma began wintering in Mesa, Arizona spending the warmer month’s home in Sioux Falls. It was during this time she met a special friend, Nathan Haggar and the couple shared a great relationship until Nathan’s passing in 2006. She was an active member in the Sons of Norway, American Legion, and Moose Lodge. The couple were also active members of Peace Lutheran Church and later, East Side Lutheran Church. Survivors include her son, Dr. Darwin “Reed” Brenden and his wife, Carol of Cedar Falls, Iowa; grandsons, Reed M. Brenden and his wife Dr. Amanda Brenden, Timothy J. Brenden and his wife, Erica, and David J. Brenden and his wife, Rachael; great grandchildren, Grace, Addie, Emma, Camden, Calvin, Cullen, and Leo Brenden; sister, Mavis Neuberger and her husband, Harold, Brookings, SD; and sister-in-law, Joanne Gaard, Brookings, SD. She is preceded in death by her husband, Orlin Brenden, parents, Ole and Charlotte Gaard, grandparents, Gustaf and Anna Lisa Erickson, and brothers, Lloyd, Evald, Robert, and Arthur Gaard.
