Description	:	LEMONT, Ill. -- Norma Diane "DeDe" Owens, 53, died May 16 at Palos Community Hospital in Palos Heights, Ill. She was born in St. Petersburg, Fla. She was a member of the Ladies Professional Golf Association for 29 years. She held a doctorate in education from the University of Virginia and won the school's distinguished alumni award in 1996. She had also won the same award from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, where she obtained a master's degree in physical education. Read More	LEMONT, Ill. -- Norma Diane "DeDe" Owens, 53, died May 16 at Palos Community Hospital in Palos Heights, Ill. She was born in St. Petersburg, Fla. She was a member of the Ladies Professional Golf Association for 29 years. She held a doctorate in education from the University of Virginia and won the school's distinguished alumni award in 1996. She had also won the same award from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, where she obtained a master's degree in physical education. She was named the LPGA Teacher of the Year in 1993 and 1997 and was the Midwest Teacher of the Year five times. In 1996, she was named one of the 18 most important people in Chicagoland's golfing community by the Chicago Tribune. She was a 1987 recipient of the Herb Graffis Award of the National Golf Foundation and won the 1997 Ellen Griffin-Rolex Award. She was named by Golf Magazine as one of the top 100 teachers in the country and was a member of the Golf Digest Professional Advisory Staff. She co-wrote seven instructional golf books and eight research articles on the game. She had been teaching at Cog Hill since 1977, except for 1997 and 1998, when she served on the research and developmental staff for Callaway Golf. SURVIVORS: her mother, Margaret C. Owens of Bluffton; a brother, the Rev. Charles E. Owens III of Bluffton; and a sister, Margaret O. Rogers of Charleston. FUNERAL: 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Church Of The Cross in Bluffton, burial at 6 p.m. in the Church Of The Ascension Cemetery in Rembert. Savannah Now, May 1999 -------------------------
