Burial services are pending in Hettinger. -Norma Frances Krogstad was born April 26, 1913, in Isabel, S.D., as the first white baby born on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation, to Gustave Osmond and Frances Emma (Spellman) Krogstad. After a few months, her family moved to Lanesboro, Minn., where she was baptized by the same pastor who confirmed her father. They moved to Reeder when she was 1 year old, where she attended school and graduated from Reeder High School in 1932. She was confirmed and attended church at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Reeder. She was the first of four children born to their family. -Norma was married to Ira Vern Martin May 19, 1933, and moved to Hettinger where they lived their entire married life. To this union, five children were born, Norma Jeanne, Gayle, Paul, David and John. She enjoyed playing the piano, sewing, crocheting rugs, gardening, reading and healthy living. She helped her husband Ira in their family owned business, Martin Sports Supply, which they operated from their garage. -Norma was a full-time wife, mother and homemaker and also did baby sitting in their home. She boarded farm students who attended Hettinger High School when her children started leaving home. She was active in the Hettinger Lutheran Church and church circle, and was a charter member of Starlite Homemakers Club. -After her husband, Ira's, death Aug. 5, 1988, Norma moved to Lynnwood in December 1988, where her son, Paul, two sisters, and several nieces and nephews lived. She enjoyed a full life where she lived in Brighton Court, a retirement home, and met many new friends, especially her friend Elvin "Gus" Gustafson. She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Lynnwood. After her first stroke in July 1996, she continued to have strokes and then moved to The Glens Adult Family Home in Lynnwood until her death Feb. 13, 2004, at the age of 90 years, nine months and 18 days. -Grateful for having shared her life are her daughter, Gayle (Lynn) Howe, Brandon, S.D.; her sons, Paul (Ellen), Seattle, and John (Barb), Clearwater, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Karen Dupzyk, Sacramento, Calif., Vicki (Wayne) Horton, Graham, Wash., Darla Quail, Williston, Deborah (Gordon) Bourne, Canton, S.D., DeVonna (John) Murrin, Duluth, Minn., Barbara (Mark) Sperlich, Brandon, David (Janet) Martin, Vashon Island, Wash., Paula (Paul) VanHolebeke, Seattle, and Tim (Michelle) Martin, Port Richey, Fla.; her sister, Elvira (Peg) Kogler, Lynnwood; and 14 great-grandchildren. -She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two children, David and Norma Jeanne (Robert) Owen; two grandchildren, Tommy Solem and Stephanie (Quail) Gray; one brother, Arnold; and one sister, Mildred (Mick) Kittleson.
