She was the youngest of six children of Roy and Odessa Derry. Liberty Hall was the Graceland College dairy at the time, and her father Roy was a dairy farmer and part-time poet. Years later, in 1978, she became the curator of Liberty Hall, a job meant for her--she loved it. The reception after the Memorial Service on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Community of Christ Church in Lamoni, will be held, fittingly, at Liberty Hall, which will be all decked out for Christmas. Norma died peacefully a little after 4:00 am on Wednesday, October 31 at The Arbors, an amazing place full of love and people with big hearts in Columbia, Missouri. Her window was slightly open, a gentle breeze was blowing in and the rain was softly falling. Her daughter Nancy was resting with her arm over her mom. It was a blessing. Norma was an amazing woman. She was lucky as a child to have a loving family, particularly wise older sisters, a strong mother, big brothers she adored and a father who was a wonderful baker and recited poetry to her while milking the cows. Her family inspired her to love books, to think for herself, and to care about tradition and making a better world. She was married to Orville LeRoy Hiles from May of 1947 until Orville's death in November of 2005. She raised four children whom she loved deeply. In 1978 she returned to college and earned her bachelor's degree in history from Graceland College. Graceland was a two-year college when she met Orville there shortly after he returned from serving in the Pacific during World War II. She went on to study for a master's degree in Museum Studies from the University of Oklahoma. Norma worked as a curator, cataloguer, and archivist. She served as president of the John Whitmer Historical Association and was on the Board of the Mormon Historical Association and the Iowa Chapter of the Victorian Society. She received a special award of merit from the John Whitmer Historical Association for the restoration of Liberty Hall in 1980 and was recognized for Liberty Hall being placed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 1984. She gave numerous speeches and wrote many articles on Joseph Smith III, Charles Derry, Lamoni, and the Reorganized Church, including her presidential address to the John Whitmer Historical Association on "Charles Derry: A Palimpsestic View" and her book Gentle Monarch: The Presidency of Israel A. Smith, published by Herald House in 1991. In the dedication to her book, Norma wrote: "For Orv, whose optimism, friendship, and love are never failing." This succinctly and perfectly captures how Norma felt about Orville. Norma and Orville had the time of their life after Norma retired from Liberty Hall by opening "Yesterday's Treasures," a wonderful antique store in Lamoni. It was a beautiful store due to Norma's excellent eye and taste. Norma and Orville had many fun antiquing trips, and they were an important part of helping to revive Lamoni's downtown in the 1990s. She loved Lamoni, and she was proud of the work she and especially Orville did to help nurture the town and its people. After Orville's death, her children, particularly Barbara and Bob who lived in Lamoni, supported Norma and made it possible for her to stay in the home she loved for many years. Throughout her life, Norma loved to read, to stay up late watching westerns on TV, to skip to the "juicy parts" of romance novels, and to take afternoon naps. She appreciated the little things that make life fun, like costume jewelry and coffee ice cream. She was outspoken and opinionated about almost everything, from politics and museums to television shows and family dinners. Norma's oldest granddaughter Sarah Mesle wrote of her Grammy: "She was funny and smart and brave and skittish and sharp and kind alternately." This captures the spirit and essence of Norma Ruth Derry Hiles. Norma has three surviving children and their spouses: Barbara Hiles Mesle of Chicago, Illinois, Nancy Hiles Johnson of Charlottesville, Virginia and Thomas Scott Hiles of Columbia, Missouri. Her son Jeffrey Paul Hiles of Kansas City, Missouri preceded her in death, Jeff's lifetime partner Robert Cody is also a surviving child of Norma's heart. She has 9 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, contributions are appreciated for the Jeffrey P. Hiles Honors Fund at Graceland University or the Lamoni Public Library.
