Description	:	Norma V. Leaming Folsom - Norma V. Leaming passed away peacefully in her home in Folsom, CA on Dec. 17th 2019 after 93 years of a life well-lived. Norma was born outside Runnels, Iowa in July of 1926, the middle child of Ross and Ines Smith. Read More	Norma V. Leaming Folsom - Norma V. Leaming passed away peacefully in her home in Folsom, CA on Dec. 17th 2019 after 93 years of a life well-lived. Norma was born outside Runnels, Iowa in July of 1926, the middle child of Ross and Ines Smith. She was raised on the family farm and attended Runnels High School graduating in 1944, one of only 9 students in her class. After graduation she perused a career in the newly developing aircraft and airline industries. First as a reservationist for Solar Aircraft, then joining Braniff Airlines in Des Moines and finally joining United Airlines where she worked as a gate and ticket agent at the Des Moines airport for over 20 years until her retirement in 1983. In 1953 Norma met the love of her life Cleatus "Speed" Leaming, a WWII veteran of Pearl Harbor who had returned to join the Des Moines Police Department where he eventually became Asst. Chief of Police. They enjoyed a 47 year marriage of great friendship and great adventures, traveling all over the world. When travel was much more difficult and much more exotic than now, Norma and Speed were able to see Europe, Thailand, and safari in Africa. But their favorite trips were the summers they spent at a fishing cabin they built themselves on the remote shores of Eagle Lake in Ontario, Canada. As well as the winters spent on the beaches of Kona, Hawaii where Norma became known for her golden-brown tan. She was a long-time resident of the Eastside of Des Moines, and spent many of her later years at Valley View Village where she had close friendships. She was the beloved Aunt of Brent Bowers and Cindy Shannahan. A proud Great-Aunt who spoiled niece Jennifer Evanko, and nephews Mike and Matt Shannahan, and adoring Great-Great Aunt to Spencer Evanko and Jett Shannahan. Predeceased by her devoted husband Speed, brother Mervin, and parents Ines and Ross Smith. She is survived by her beloved sister Wanda Bowers and a close-knit extended family who had brought her out to California in 2018 to live closer to them. Norma was smart, quick-witted and had a joyous laugh. Her favorite phase when we would ask how she was doing was always "I'm in pretty good shape, for the shape I'm in." She loved a good shopping day with her nieces, her collection of dragon figurines, a nice piece of chocolate, and always had her nails done and a pretty coral lipstick on. She was a good cook - known for her lasagna on Christmas Eve and her "Cherry Delight" for Canadian fish-frys and family parties. Whenever we smell Dove soap or Estee Lauder Youth Dew perfume we will think of her and she will be greatly missed. A private family funeral service will be held in Runnels, Iowa in the Spring.
