Celebration of Life services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 30, 2015 at Powers Funeral Home junction of highway 34 and 25 in Creston. Pastor Dan Moore will officiate. Burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Cromwell. Open visitation will be 1-5:00 p.m. Sunday, March 29, 2014, with family receiving friends from 3-5:00 p.m. Sunday. Memorials are to be established. Online condolences can be given at www.powersfh.com. Norman Calvin Ridinger was born August 10, 1917 on a farm south of Murray, to Raymond Park Ridinger and Lena Olive (Katzenbarger) Ridinger. He grew up on farms in that area and went to Doyle Country School and Murray High School. Norm had one older brother. Norman's great-grandparents were the first white settlers in the area. His careers went from delivering mail on horseback to engineering the Amtrak. He began working for the Burlington Railroad in 1942 as a fireman shoveling coal. Over the years his jobs with C.B. & Q. changed. He worked out of St. Joseph, Mo., Pacific Junction, Council Bluffs and primarily Creston. After retiring, he worked for Buxton & West Auctioneer's as a ringman. Norm then became interested in coin collecting, eventually appraising coins to be auctioned. During all of this time he managed a farm south of Afton. Norman married Donella Newton on October 29, 1939 in Murray, Ia. To the union two children were born. They lived in Murray, Creston, St. Joe and back to Creston. They divorced in 1945. Norm married Claudine Utterback on August 15, 1950 in Minnesota. There weren't many things he wanted to do that he didn't accomplish. He has hunted, fished and traveled all of his adult life. Norm and Claudine lived at the Country Club outside of Creston for many years and he has kept his home and driven his car until he was 97 ½ years old. Norm was a member of the Creston Elks Lodge, Gibson Library Coffee Club, and former Creston Country Club Board member. Norm was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Claudine in 1999, a granddaughter, Debra South, a son-in-law, Eldon South, two step grandsons and his brother, Mansel. Contributor: Robin Stuva
