Description	:	Norman Conrad Harley, 76, of Lincoln, passed away July 26, 2020. Norm was born July 26, 1944 in Norfolk, Nebraska to Vernon and Clara (Roth) Harley. Norm was born July 26, 1944 in Norfolk, Nebraska to Vernon and Clara (Roth) Harley. He grew up in the Chambers community where he attended elementary school and went on to graduate from high school in 1962. He was baptized and later confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Norm attended college at Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska and graduated from there in 1966 at which time he received a Teaching call to Trinity Lutheran School in Centralia, Illinois. He taught a 3rd and 4th grade home room and Science grades 3-8. He remained at that position for seven years until, at the request of his dad, he returned home to Chambers to work in the agri-business, Harley Feed and Fertilizer. That business was sold in 1985 to Coash Inc., and he remained as their business manager for the next six years. In 1993 he had the opportunity to return to the classroom in a unique setting known as a “country school. ” This was a District 210 which was south of Atkinson, Nebraska. He may have been absent from education for twenty years but he immediately knew he had found his niche once again. He taught at that district for six years. His last teaching post was at Richland school near Burwell where he guided the lives of still more energetic and fun elementary school kids until he retired in May 2010. He truly loved children and his passion for finding ways to enhance their learning was always evident. Norm married Carole Hoffman, his childhood friend and high school sweetheart June 27, 1965 at Bethany Presbyterian Church. They had the wonderful privilege of being married for 55 years. They were blessed with three sons, Scott Vernon, Brian Wayne and James Norman. They lived in Seward, Nebraska, Centralia, Illinois, and then back to Chambers where they resided for 37 years. In 2011 they moved to Lincoln to retire, because they wanted to be closer to grandchildren and more readily accessible to their out of-state sons and their families. This proved to be the right decision and the past nine years have been spent doing what Norm and Carole do best and that is spending time with family. The happiness and joy that has come from interaction with their six grandchildren has been truly the highlight of their retirement years. The Lord took Norm home on his 76th birthday. He will be remembered by all who knew him for his positive and happy life. He loved humor which he exhibited countless times each and every day. He had a passion for helping others, which was evident with his leadership at Trinity Lutheran Church and School. He held many offices at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Chambers and also in the village of Chambers. He was a volunteer firefighter and EMT with the Chambers Fire Department for 36 years. He most recently assumed the leadership of the Transportation team at Messiah Lutheran Church which has provided rides to church to anyone who desired the opportunity to worship in church each Sunday. One would be remiss not to mention Norm’s lifelong love affair with almost any vehicle on wheels. Whether it be cars, trucks, campers, lawnmowers, or motorcycles, he definitely enjoyed buying, selling and maintaining his “rolling stock!” Family members include his wife Carole; sons Scott (fiancé Annette Deets), Brian, and Jim (Susie) Harley; grandchildren Liam, Conner, Averie, Olivia, Addison and Reagan Harley; sister Darlene Reiner; sister-in-law, brother-in-law Wayne and Jan Hoffman, Harold and Kathryn Dexter; many nieces, nephews and friends. Preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law Ralph and Ramona Hoffman; brother-in-law Kenneth Reiner. Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m. Friday (7-31-20) Messiah Lutheran Church, 1800 South 84th Street with Pastors John Kunze and Dustin Lappe officiating. Graveside service: 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Chambers Cemetery. Memorials to the family for future designation. Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Thursday at Roper and Sons South Lincoln Chapel, 3950 Hohensee Drive (40th & Yankee Hill Rd).
