Wootton, Retired Postal Aide Norman Douglas (Woody) Wootton, 65, former assistant postmaster of the Silver Spring Post Office, died Thursday at his retirement home in Port Charlotte, Fla., of cancer. Mr. Wootton, who spent 41 years with the postal service before retiring in 1966, supervised the installation and operation of Wheaton of one of the first self-service post offices. At Silver Spring, he oversaw implementation of one of the first automated letter handling systems in this country. Mr. Wootton was a past president of the Silver Spring Rotary Club and had a perfect attendance record at meetings for 29 years. He spent all but the last seven years of his life in Montgomery County. Mr. Wootton's family goes back to America's earliest settlers and includes a Thomas Sprigg Wootton who introduced legislation that created Montgomery and Washington from what was then Frederick County. Mr. Wootton is survived by his wife, the former Tah-Wee-Nah Mackey, of the home in Port Charlotte; a son, Richard, of College Park; a daughter, Norma Wootton Murphy, of Atlanta; two brothers, William Wootton of Silver Spring and Edward Wootton of Port Charlotte; and four sisters, Evelyn Wootton Cunningham of Venice, Fla., Ella Bamford of Vancouver, B.C., and Edith and Blanche Wootton, both of Silver Spring.
