Description	:	Norman Kodell Shelton, age 95, of Westfield, NC (Francisco Community), passed away Friday, September 19, 2014 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born in Stokes County on August 11, 1919, to the late Willie Norman Shelton and Trudie Ann Simmons Shelton. He was an active member of the Francisco Presbyterian Church serving as youth group leader, deacon, elder, and treasurer. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during WWII with a rank of Corporal. Read More	Norman Kodell Shelton, age 95, of Westfield, NC (Francisco Community), passed away Friday, September 19, 2014 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born in Stokes County on August 11, 1919, to the late Willie Norman Shelton and Trudie Ann Simmons Shelton. He was an active member of the Francisco Presbyterian Church serving as youth group leader, deacon, elder, and treasurer. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during WWII with a rank of Corporal. Kodell graduated in 1938 from Francisco School. He was enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1940 to help build Hanging Rock State Park. He worked as a surveyor, custodian and basketball coach at Francisco School, as a store clerk, then the store manager and eventually the owner of Kodell Shelton's Grocery 1964-1999 in Francisco. He served Stokes County as Election Precinct Judge and Tax Supervisor. Mr. Shelton spent most of his life as a busy volunteer. He contributed sixty years to the Boy Scouts of America, including twenty-eight years as Scout Master of the Francisco's Troop 421 earning the Silver Beaver (scouting's highest leadership award). The BSA Old Hickory Council inducted him into the Hanging Rock District Hall of Fame in 2007. He has a commemorative brick at Camp Raven Knob. Kodell was a Charter member of the Francisco Ruritan Club and instrumental in establishing the Francisco Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad. He held the office of president and treasurer of the organization. He was trained as an EMT and Fireman earning many awards. During his retirement, Papa Kodell spent more time with his family, enjoyed being outside on his tractor, feeding his yard birds, and watching his flowers bloom. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Betty Ruth Rogers Shelton; three daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda Shelton (Ted) Oakley of Durham, Joan Shelton (Mark) Schultz of King, and Anna Shelton (Wayne) Tilley of Lawsonville; eight grandchildren, Michael Oakley, Amanda Oakley (Bobby) Hort, Joey (Tempy) Tilley, Ashley Tilley (Adam) Rummage, Elizabeth Schultz ( Matt) Sidell, Catherine Schultz, Tanna Tilley, and Robert Schultz; and three great-grandchildren, Caroline Hort, Daemyn Hort, and Baylee Tilley. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Connie Sue Shelton; two brothers, Berkley Alton Shelton and Robert Frank Shelton; and his mother-in-law, Annie Hall Rogers. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, September 23, 2014, at 2:00 P.M. at Francisco Presbyterian Church. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Floral tributes will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Francisco Ruritan Club or the Francisco Ruritan Club Scholarship Fund, c/o David Parker 7690 NC 89 Hwy West, Westfield, NC 27053. The family would like to thank the caregivers who have helped Kodell stay safe and comfortable in the recent months at Forsyth Medical Center, Pioneer Community Hospital of Stokes, The Landmark Living Center, Mountain View Medical, and Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. The family will receive friends on Monday, September 22, 2014 from 6:00-8:00 P.M. at Francisco Presbyterian Church.
