Norman worked as a carpenter and belonged to San Diego Carpenter's Local 1571, where he was a trustee from 1955 to 1963, financial secretary from 1963 to 1975 and a delegate from 1956 to 1975, Norman was affiliated with San Diego Imperial Counties Labor Council from 1967 to 1975. The couple then moved to Cedar Rapids, where he belonged to Carpenter's Local 308. A memorial fund has been established for the American Diabetes Association.
