Mitchell, 72, 51 W. Kirkwood. He died Saturday at 2:10 p.m. at the Jefferson County Hospital where he had been a patient since Tuesday. The rites today were scheduled at the Raymond Funeral Home with Rev. Wilson Hyde officiating. burial (sic. Burial) will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Norval G. Mitchell was born Aug. 11, 1899, in Jefferson County, the son of Etna and Jessie Thompson Mitchell. He was reared and educated in Jefferson County. He was married to Sybil Brown Dec. 12, 1918, at Mount Pleasant. Mitchell was a semi-retired mechanic, last employed at the Standard Service Station. He had served on the Fairfield Fire Department for 30 years before his retirement in 1959. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, past exalted ruler of the Elks Lodge and a life member of that organization, and a member of the Eagles Lodge. In addition to his widow, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Martin, Denver, Colo.; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren; one brother, Lester Mitchell, Chicago; and four sisters, Mrs. Otto Harlan and Mrs. Quenten Bjustrom, both of Algona; Mrs. Edmund Larson and Mrs. Arie Dittmer, both of Burlington. Mitchell was preceded in death by one brother. ------------------------------ 50th Wedding Anniversary Fairfield Ledger Friday Dec. 13, 1968 Pg. 3 Col. 4 (Note: story accompanied by a photo of the couple, but microfilm image not clear enough to use as part of this transcription) Golden Wedding For Mitchells Mr. and Mrs. Norval Mitchell, 51 West Kirkwood, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on December 12 and in their honor an open house will be held on Sunday, December 15 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the community room of the Methodist Church. The couple requests no gifts. Sybil Brown and Norval Mitchell were united in marriage December 12, 1918 at Mt. Pleasant with the Rev. Keesey, officiating. They were attended by Mrs. Keesey and the bride's sister, Mrs. Allen Abbey of LeClaire, Iowa who plans to attend the reception. They are the parents of one daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Martin of Denver, Colo. They have three grandchildren, Robert and Susan Martin of Denver and Mitchell Martin of Los Angeles, Calif., and one great grandchild, Scott Mitchell Martin of Los Angeles. Dorothy and her daughter Susan of Denver and the daughter-in-law, Mrs. Mitchell Martin and son of Los Angeles plan to attend the celebration on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell have lived in Fairfield their entire married life and he is a retired mechanic but still employed part time as mechanic at Standard Service station. ------------------------ Note: the daughter, Dorothy Louise Mitchell Martin (Mrs. W. F. "Lefty" Martin), was born in Fairfield, Iowa on October 12, 1920 and died at Mesa, Arizona on July 24, 2001. According to her Fairfield Ledger obituary on Monday, July 30, 2001, she was "survived by her son, Mitchell Lee Martin of San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico; one daughter, Susan Kay Martin of Mesa; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband W. F. "Lefty" Martin; one son, Robert Ferrell Martin; and one grandson, Michael Robert Trenam." Her obituary did not provide a burial location/disposition, and a/o June 7, 2018 there doesn't appear to be a credible FindAGrave memorial entered for her. If/when one is entered, perhaps it will be linked to the memorials for her parents, Norval and Sybil Mitchell.
