Minnick Funeral Home in Beemer is in charge of arrangements. Nyla passed away on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at the Colonial Haven Nursing Home in Beemer, NE. Nyla Irene Picha was born on July 15, 1931, at Beemer to Louis and Edna (Kuester) Picha. She was baptized and confirmed at Beemer. Nyla attended Cuming County rural schools and graduated from West Point High School in 1949. She worked at West Point Cold Storage prior to her marriage. On Sept. 17, 1953, she was united in marriage to Richard Batenhorst at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point. The couple farmed north of Beemer on the same farm all their married life. Nyla was an active farm wife, milking cows, helping with the calves and other farm chores. Nyla was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Beemer, its Altar Society and Holy Cross Choir. She also taught the first-grade CCD class for 25 years, worked at the election polls in Beemer and also in the open-class building at the county fair. Nyla loved fishing, playing cards, spending time with the family and being outdoors. Survivors include husband Richard Batenhorst of Beemer; sons Gary and wife Jean Batenhorst of West Point and children John, Kara and Kristine, Alan Batenhorst of Beemer; sister Berneice Peterson of West Point. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Diana Batenhorst, brother Richard Picha and sisters Maxine E. Lofgren and Lois Jean Burger. The Norfolk Daily News
