Nyle Schmidt was born Aug. 14, 1925 at Pollock, S.D. to Jacob and Leia (Berreth) Schmidt. This is the area where he was raised and attended school. On Dec. 4, 1943, Nyle entered the United States Army. He attended basic training camp in Fannin, Texas and Infantry camp in Van Dorn, Miss. He served in the 75th Infantry of Breckenridge, Ky. In Oct., 1944, he was stationed overseas. He fought in the Battle of the Buldge and also served in the 75th Infantry as a rifleman stationed at Buringham England, Swan Sea Wales, London, South Hampton, Paris, France and Namun. He was honorably discharged on June 25, 1946. Nyle married Kathryn Bosch on May 29, 1951. They made their home in Aberdeen with their daughters, Donna and JoAnn. Nyle was employed by Northwestern Public Service until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of the YMCA, Masons Sunrise #211, Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post #24 of Aberdeen, Veterans of Foreign Wars, CC Croal Post #17 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He enjoyed golfing, going to the YMCA, bicycling, traveling and playing darts. Survivors include his wife, Kathryn of Aberdeen; two daughters, Donna Schmidt of Aberdeen and JoAnn (Andy) Swenson of Rapid City, S.D.; two grandchildren, Brandi and Eric Swenson; one brother, Myron (Darlene) Schmidt. He was preceded in death by his parents. Casket bearers will be Curt Misslitz, Lawrence Reinbold, Carrold Wahl, Arnie Huizenga, Ray Preszler and Darnell Madsen. Honorary casket bearers will be employees of Northwestern Public Service and his friends. Published in the Aberdeen News on 2/7/2005.
