SOURCES (Source; The Cooley genealogy : the descendants of Ensign Benjamin Cooley, an early settler of Springfield and Longmeadow, Massachusetts;SECTION II OBADIAH COOLEY2) 2 OBADIAN COOLEY, oldest son and second child of Benjamin and Sarah Cooley, No. 1, page 195, was born Jan. 27, 1646/7, Springfield, Mass., and died there Sept. 3, 1690. He married Nov. 9, 1670, Windsor, Conn., Rebecca Williams, da. John and Mary (Burley) of Windsor, born Aug. 20, 1649, Windsor, died Oct. i8, I 715, Springfield, as Mrs. John Warner. After the death of Obadiah Cooley she married, as his 2nd wife, Nov. 26, 1691, John Warner. John Warner married (3) Sarah Ferry, a sister of John Ferry who married Obadiah Cooley’s daughter, Mary Cooley, No. iii below.
The earliest reference to Obadiah Cooley in the town records is that made concerning his assigned seat in the Meeting House in I66/3, when at the age of six— teen he sat “Below y Pillars on y North Side.” He was twenty-four years old when he married. It seems likely that he was a member of the militia organized in the raid on Springfield in 1675 during King Philip’s War, for he was then nearly thirty years old; but no record of military service for Obadiah Cooley has been found.
In spite of statements to the contrary in The Long- meadow Centennia4 neither Obadiah Cooley I nor Obadiah Cooley II ever maintained residences in Longmeadow. Obadiah Cooley I lived in Longmeadow, probably, during the years after his father, Benjamin Cooley, removed there (about 166o), until he established his own home, which was in the village of Springfield. Benjamin Cooley’s other four sons lived in Long- meadow; Joseph the youngest son removed from there to Somers, Conn., about 1730.
The first grant of land made to Obadiah Cooley in 1664 (given as i66 in The Longmeadow Centennial) was for 35 acres. From a description of this grant (Burt, Vol. I, p. 3O), it is evident that this 35 acres was part of the division of the land between the present villages of Thompsonville and Warehouse Point, Conn. Obadiah never lived on this property.
The home of Obadiah Cooley was the tract bounded north by the “Way to the Lower Wharf,” now York Street; south by Mill River; east by the way to the mill, now South Main Street; and west by the Connecticut River. Obadiah Cooley II occupied this same homesite. Concerning Obadiah Cooley II’s homesite, the following identification of it as the same as that owned by his father is taken from the Town Records (Burt, Vol. II, p. 518). In 1700:We who were appointed to look after the highways in this Towne being Informed that Obadiah Cooley had Encroached upon the high ways wee who we are appointed did upon the 7th day of June 1700 take a veiw of his sd Obadiah Cooleys fence and we did find he had Encroached upon the highway at the lower end of the Towne by his house with in the gate about one rod in heredity and for some rods in length we did therefore order him to remove his fence in unto a stake we set up right to the second post from his gate and so it is to run straight about a foot from the corner of his Barn, etc.The Obadiah Cooley home lot is not so identified on Burt’s map of early Springfield. On this map, the Obadiah Cooley property is divided into two properties, the northern section described as “Two lots each rods broad, running back to Mill Lot granted to Samuel Wright Jr. and Roger Pritchard, sold to Thomas Ban- croft”; the southern section is described as “The Mill Lot of 17 acres.”
In his will Benjamin Cooley gave to his son Obadiah:
al those Lands I bought of Thomas Bancroft of Springfeild which are Specified in that deed I have of him, and also al that Land I bought of the Worshipful Jn° Pynchon, Esq. according to the ful extent of that Deed I have from him; also I give him all that land I bought of Goodman Gunn, now in Thomas Noble’s Improvement, but in Case Thomas Noble shal upon demand without delay give my Son Obadiah a deed of his Land at Scipmup & divide it, y my Son Obadiah shal have that... etc., etc. The deed for the Bancroft purchase has not been located; this seems obviously to refer to the property described by Burt as “Two lots each. . running back to Mill Lot granted to Samuel Wright Jr. and Roger Pritchard, sold to Thomas Bancroft,” since this is the property which adjoins the Mill Lot, purchased from Major John Pynchon by Benjamin Cooley in 1679, described in the deed as:One parcel & his whole Lot that Lyes on the west side of the highway to the mil River & containes seven or eight acres more or less, & is bounded Easterly & southerly by the said highway, & westerly by the brook that Runs along by Obadiah Cooley, his Land.. And another parcel on the plot of ground where the old mil stood containing one acre more or less & lies on the westerly side of the brooke there & lies between Two parcels of Land of Obadiah Cooley; and the highway to the Lower Wharfe joins on the Northerly end of it:... These two properties, purchased from Thomas Ban- croft and Major John Pynchon by Benjamin Cooley, were the home property of Obadiah Cooley I, willed to him by his father in 1684, but occupied previously to that time, and becoming in turn the home property of Obadiah Cooley II.
Concerning the Thomas Noble Improvement lands which Benjamin willed his son Obadiah, Benjamin Cooley had said, “in case Thomas Noble shal upon demand without delay give my Son Obadiah a deed of his Land at Scipmup & divide it, yfl my son Obadiah shal have that.” The Book of Possessions mentions no land owned by Benjamin Cooley at Skipmuck (Chicopee Falls), yet the inventory of his estate includes 6o acres there, valued at £57. Benjamin Cooley apparently had traded some land he had bought in Westfield from Thomas Gun, for some land in Skipmuck (Chicopee Falls) owned by Thomas Noble.
That he had done so prior to 1673 is evidenced by the fact that in that year he was granted “Six acres of land joyning to ye South side of his other land yt is neere his son Henry Chapins” (husband of Bethia Cooley, Benjamin’s daughter) (Burt, Vol. II, p. 245). This land was at Chicopee. Immediately after Benjamin Cooley’s death, Obadiah secured the deed to the property his father had willed him, and the following is dated Oct. 1, 1684:
Know all men by these presents that I Thomas Noble of the Town of Westfeild in the Colony of Massachusets have divers years since (by way of exchange of Land at Springfield for land at Westfeild WC Ensigne Benjamin Cooley bought of Thomas Gun of Westfeild) Given granted bargained & Sold unto Ensigne Benjamin Cooley of Springfeild late deceased, divers parcels of Land Lyeing in the township of Springfeild afores’ & in that Tract of Land called Skipmuck in Springfeild afores” Therefore for the causes pmised & other good Considerations, I the s4 Tho: Noble do Ratify & Confirme my said gift, grant bargaine & sale of Land for Land unto Obadiah Cooley of Springfeild aforeW’ the eldest son of the s’ deceased.
Eight parcels of land were included, an abstract of which is as follows:10 acre homelot, 40 rods square, adjoining land thatJohn Pynchon bought of Charles Ferry.11 or 12 acres in the field Benjamin Cooley and Able Wright fenced in.8 acres, next to the hill, 30 rods wide at the north endand 12 rods at the south end, bounded by a ditch,east by hill, west by Able Wright, north by the meadow lot.10 acres next to Rowland Stebbins ditch, 24 rods broad at east end, at south end, 46 rods sloping to the river, bounded east by Able Wright, west and north by meadow.4 acres, west side of brook, bounded north by Able Wright, west by Rowland Thomas, east by brook.8 acres meadow, 8o rods long, 10 rods broad at south end, 22 rods broad at north end, bounded east by Able Wright, north by hill, west by brook, south by said Obadiah Cooley.8 acres meadow, 16 by 8o rods, bounded north by hill,south by Able Wright’s upland, east and west by Able Wright.12 acres meadow, 25 by 8o rods bounded north by hill,east and west by Able Wright’s meadow, south by Wright and said Cooley. The eight parcels of land included in this deed of Oct. 1, 1668 from Thomas Noble to Obadiah Cooley, confirming gift of Benjamin Cooley to his son Obadiah, were all in the vicinity of the present junction of Carew and East Main Streets in the Skipmuck district of Chicopee Falls, where the Oxford Country Club now is. Part or all of this property was given by Obadiah Cooley I to his son Jonathan Coo1ey. OBADIAH COOLEY.
Obadiah Cooley, son of Benjamin and Sarah, married Rebecca WILLIAMS at Windsor. She was a daughter of John Williams. He died September 3, 1690, and his widow married John WARNER, and died October 18, 1715.
