According to report made by Coroner Dr. R. L. Fenton first knowledge of the tragedy came when Mr. Haines did not appear at the Roanoke country school to get his wife, who teaches there. Wednesday afternoon Mrs. Haines walked home to find her husband lying on the floor at home. Apparently he had been dead for some little time. Neighbors were summoned and in turn they called Dr. Fenton. Mr. Haines was lying on the floor of the dining room. The Coroner said that he had probably taken his life around noon. Death came from a shot fired from an old .20 gauge shotgun for which Haines had recently purchased a box of high velocity shells. The gun had been held close to his breast and the blast went into his heart causing death instantly. No motive is given for the suicide other than that Mrs. Haines said that her husband had been nervous recently and had seemed to worry inordinately over a number of things. WELL KNOWN AND LIKED He was well known and had many friends to whom his tragic death comes as a deep sorrow. He was born July 25, 1917 in Appanoose county the son of Frank and Emma Haines. He had reached 37 years, eight months and 14 days of age. On December 26, 1946 he had united in marriage with Iola Coulson who survives his passing. He leaves a brother Claude, two sisters Pauline Wright, of Cincinnati, and Evelyn Brock, of Ottumwa. One brother Oris Carl Haines preceded him in death and died while in the U. S. armed services. Funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. from the Johnson Funeral home in Centerville with the Rev. Lyle Armstrong officiating and burial will be in the Pleasant Hill cemetery at Cincinnati. ~~ Centerville Iowegian Friday, April 1, 1955 Page 2 Olaf Haines, son of Frank and Emma Haines, was born July 25, 1917 in Appanoose County, Iowa, where he spent his entire life. He passed away at his farm home west of Cincinnati, March 9, 1955 at the age of 37 years, 7 months, and 12 days. He was married to Iola Coulson on Dec. 26, 1946, who survives his passing. Other survivors are his parents of Centerville; one brother, Claude, of Moulton; two sisters Mrs. Evelyn Brock of Ottumwa and Mrs. Pauline Wright of Cincinnati, several nieces and nephews, in whom he found .much joy. He also leaves many other relatives and friends to mourn his passing. He is preceded in death by one brother. Orris, who was killed in World War II. Olaf was a loving companion and and will be greatly missed by all those who knew him. Funeral services were held at the Johnson Funeral Home, Saturday, March 12 at 2 p.m., with Lyle Armstrong of Clarence, Missouri, officiating. Songs were "Sometime We'll Understand" and "No Tears in Heaven" sang by Mr. Max Ellis. Pallbearers were neighbors of Olaf's, which wore Neil Wood, Gale Long, Gerald Wallace, Lester Brown, Charles Lowe, Harold Lowe.
