Funeral services were Saturday, February 9, 2008 at the New Helgen Lutheran Church in Florence with Reverend Gary Anderson officiating. Dorothy Anderson was the organist. Interment in the Bergen Cemetery, Dexter Township, Codington Co., SD. Military Honors were conducted by the American Legion Codington County Post 17. Olaf Raymond Amdahl was born on December 14, 1913 to Olaf and Josephine (Opheim) Amdahl in Grant County, South Dakota. He was confirmed at Lebanon Lutheran Church in 1927. Ray joined the U.S. Navy at Great Lakes, Illinois at the age of 24. He boarded the U.S.S. Salt Lake City heavy cruiser in 1938. Ray spent Fleet Week in Portland, Oregon and was assigned to the First Division. From Portland he went to Long Beach, California where he met his future wife, Alma Limmer. Ray was the Chief Turret Captain aboard the U.S.S. Salt Lake City when she escorted the U.S.S. Hornet which carried the B-25 bombers and the Doolittle Raiders. He fought at Savoy Island in 1942, the Coral Sea, Guadalcanal, and the Komandorski Islands. He was part of the joint allied force under the command of the British Admiral when Australia was in peril. Ray received his Letter of Commendation for his action taken during a fire on the ship. He was proud to have served his Country during World War II. Ray and Alma were married in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on April 21, 1944 after which Ray went to school in Philadelphia and Washington, DC. He was discharged from the Navy in October of 1945 after serving seven years and eight months. Following the war, Ray and Alma moved to Ortley, SD where Ray started farming. In 1952 they moved to a farm near South Shore, SD. Ray farmed with his son, Roger until he retired at the age of 78, and then built a home on Punished Woman's Lake in South Shore. Ray continued helping Roger with harvesting until a couple of years ago. Ray and Alma celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1995. Alma Amdahl passed away on October 9, 1997. Ray was Germantown Township Supervisor for 40 years. He was an active member of the Bergen Lutheran Church, a member of Post 5022 of the VFW of Summit, and Farmer's Union. He enjoyed playing cards, traveling, reading, helping his children with building projects, and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Ray especially enjoyed traveling to the U.S.S. Salt Lake City Ship reunions. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alma; his sisters, Beatrice (Carl) Richter, Ruby (Leonard) Wiley, Alice (Bill) Fiebelkorn, and Verna (Roy) Duke; his brothers, Joseph (Marjorie) Amdahl, Arlie Amdahl, and Merle (Delores) Amdahl; his sister-in-law, Clara (Adolph) Dorow; his brother-in-law, Raymond (Ida) Limmer; and his nephews, Gary Fiebelkorn, Keith Wiley, Charles Amdahl, and Robert Amdahl and his wife, Joan. He is survived by his children, Shirley (Jerome) Scriver of Two Rivers, WI, Jean (Rollie) Kindvall of Baltic, SD, and Roger Amdahl of South Shore; his sister, Helen (Mel) Nelson of Benton City, WA; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Amdahl of Milbank, and Joyce Schoenbeck of Watertown; five grandchildren, Bryn Scriver and her husband, (John Nondorf), Ryan Scriver, Scott (Michelle) Kindvall, Sara Kindvall, and Austin Amdahl; three great grandchildren, Tyler Kindvall, Hunter Kindvall and Caydence Scriver; and many nieces and nephews. Ray's family would like to thank the staff at Jenkins Living Center, Lori and the rest of the staff at the Reflections Unit, LeRita, Bev and the other care givers of Prairie Lakes Home Health Care, Vicki of Prairie Lakes Hospice, Dr. Wilde, Janice Waege, Peggy Meyer and Hilda Grewing of South Shore.
