OLE ANDERSON KVISTAS NELSON FAMILY DATA SUMMARY Ole Nelson was the fifth child of Anders Nilsen Hestemyr and Anne Helen Lagesdtr. He and his twin sister, Helle, were born on July 10, 1855 at Hestemyr farm, Lier Twp. Buskerud County, Norway. They were Baptized at Frogner Lutheran Church on September 9, 1855. Helle died in infancy (1856). Ole Nelson emigrated to the USA on 25 April 1876 on the steamship, St. Olaf. However, before leaving Norway he had a relationship with Kristine Gulsdtr. Ekes who was born circa 1855 at Ekes farm, Lier Twp., Buskerud County, Norway. Their son, August Olsen Kvistas, was born on December 1, 1876 after Ole had come to the USA. August and his mother, Kristine, Lived with Ole's parents in Norway. When Ole came to Minnesota he was welcomed into the home of his oldest brother, Nils Anderson. Ole was listed as a border at the Nils Anderson home in the 1880 Census Report for Camp Lake Twp., Swift County, MN. Ole married Gunhild Teigen, daughter of Ole Knudson Stavn and Thuri Kristiansdtr., on October 14, 1880 at Chippewa Lutheran Church, Rolling Forks Twp., Pope County, MN., USA. Chippewa Lutheran Church was not fully completed and dedicated until in 1889. The church was located near the Chippewa River in Rolling Forks Twp. Chippewa Lutheran Church, later called Rolling Forks Lutheran Church, was in 1966 incorporated with the Swift Falls and St. Pauli Lutheran Churches into the present Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church building and congregation in Swift Falls, MN. Church records state that Gunhild Teigen had been born in Nass in Hallingdal, Norway. Ole and Gunhild's two oldest children were born in Camp Lake Twp., Swift County, MN. The Ole Nelson family moved to Bule Mounds Twp., Pope County, MN in ca. 1882, but the place was sold at a Sheriff Sale on February 16, 1895. Ole Nelson applied for his first Citizenship Papers in Pope County, MN on 18 October 1886. He became a U. S. Citizen on 14 June 1897. The family lived in Blue Mounds Twp., Pope County from circa 1882-1897. After 1897 the family moved to a farm near Roslyn, SD living there until 1919 when they moved to Sisseton, SD. They reared the following eleven children: Gilbert, Alfred, Lena, Ovedia, Annie, Ida, Martin, Henry, Knut, Thea, and Elvin Nelson. Ole Nelson's wife, Gunhild, died at age 43, on 4 March 1901 at Wist, SD where she is buried (Zoar Lutheran Cemetery). She had a brother, Ole Teigen, who lived in Pope County at the time and attended her funeral according to the Pope County weekly newspaper. On October 17, 1908 at Roslyn, Day County, SD, Ole Nelson was married to the widow, Marit Flaten Bergseng, daughter of Nels Flaten. In that marriage OIe acquired six step-children who had been born during Marit's previous marriage to a Mr. Bergseng. Those children were: Helma, Elmer, Martin, George, Martha, and Anna Bergseng. Ole's death, at age 81, on July 31, 1936 was caused by cancer. Marit's death, at age 54, on April 28, 1941 was caused by stomach cancer and senility.
