Description	:	Ole O. Bleke, a native of Melhus Norway, was born October 17, 1845, and emigrated to America in the early summer of 1870. He landed at Quebec, Canada and immediately crossed the border to the United States coming directly to Sioux City, Iowa where he first worked on railroad construction (St Paul & Sioux City R.R.) for three months. On his first trip the boat went to St Louis,... Read More	Ole O. Bleke, a native of Melhus Norway, was born October 17, 1845, and emigrated to America in the early summer of 1870. He landed at Quebec, Canada and immediately crossed the border to the United States coming directly to Sioux City, Iowa where he first worked on railroad construction (St Paul & Sioux City R.R.) for three months. Ole then spent a short time working on a farm in Woodbury county Iowa and later returned to Sioux City where he accepted a position on a Missouri River Steamboat. On his first trip the boat went to St Louis, thence to Memphis and on down the Mississippi to the mouth of the Arkansas river and then on up to Little Rock Arkansas. At Little Rock, Mr. Bleke was employed at different times on the Little Rock and Fort Smith railroad, in a sawmill for a time, at quarrying stone and some of his time farming. In 1873 he went north to Omaha, Nebr. where he worked in a foundry and in the spring of1874 he arrived in Dakota Territory and entered a claim on 160 acres of section #12, Turner township, Turner County and settled on it that same year. A hard working, industrious person, Ole began at once to break up the sod and improve the land by erecting buildings and planting trees. For several years he worked in a foundry in Sioux City, Iowa while maintaining his home and using his spare moments in the cultivation of his farm 75 miles away. He then purchased the property on section #11 and #14 and established his residence there. Ole now owned a total of 520 acres on which many improvements were made. Ole must surely have felt like a wealthy King, having left Norway only five years hence, where his total real estate holdings never exceeded more than the dirt and dust which accumulated on his boots. Ole Blake was married three times, his first wife being Miss Randy Knutsdatter Vægten, from Børsen, Sør-Trøndelag, Norway to whom he was married in May or June, (vital statistics were not required or recorded that early) 1874 in Turner County shortly after his arrival in Dakota Terr., a union which lasted only a few months when she passed away in 1875. Randi is burried at Melhus cemeetery, Turner county, Dakota Territory, Lot #23, Grave #3, Unmarked grave. Ole next was married to Marit Løberg, another native of Norway, in Sioux City, Iowa. Mary died in that city in Sept. 1882 leaving Ole with one child, Marcus. Ole then married Carrie Stensaas in 1884 and nine additional children came to bless this union, Gyda,(died age 10) Klara,(died at 4 mo.) Olaf, Anna, Albert, Selma, Oscar,(Aug 1894 - Dec1895) Gyda II, and Clara. Ole died November 20, 1902 and Carrie Blake passed away July 29, 1953 at the age of ninety.
