Janie/Jennie, born about Jun 1895 in Iowa ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ole (Ola) Eriksen Bygnes was the eldest son of Erik Olsen Bygnes and Barbro Olsdatter. He is Mary Ann Dalen Burke's great, great uncle (her grandfather, Ole Johan Egelius Dalen's uncle). Excerpted from "The Bygness Family in America": Ole Erickson Bygness was born on October 14, 1844 on the Bygness farm near Coppervick[Kopervik], Norway, the oldest son of Eric and Barbara Bygness. He was married to Aasa Mattson the latter part of March, 1874. Six children were born to them while they were still in Norway. They were John, Ben, Ed, Martin, Alfred, and another boy named Ben who died at six months. Ole Bygness worked some years after his marriage in the copper mines in Norway, but as his brother, Eric, and his uncle John Sevried, had gone to America, the new country held higher hopes for his future too. In 1887, he left his family in Norway and came to America and worked a year on farms around Huxley, Iowa, then sent for his wife and children. Mrs. Bygness, with her five children, her husband's sister, Inger Bygness, and his niece, Barbara Jacobson, started on the long and uncertain journey to America and their new home. After much difficulty they arrived with other immigrants at Huxley on June 17, 1788[1888]. Soon after coming to America, Ole transposed the surname Bygness and adopted the name of Erickson for the family surname. Four children were born to Ole and Aasa after coming to the United States - Esther and Jennie and two boys who died in infancy. After coming to America, most of Ole's life was spent in various towns in Story County, being employed most of the time as a railroad maintenance worker. The latter part of his life was spent in Ames, being one of the group that organized the Lutheran Church in Ames, and he was a devout and active member of that same church. After an illness of three years, he died April, 1921. No great wealth was accumulated during his life but no greater heritage could be left than this - steadfastness, honesty, hard work and a deep and profound belief in God. ~~Thanks to Contributor: Jean Wilson (48841367)
