His parents, Ole and Randi, and uncle Jorgen emigrated with him and his wife and 4 oldest living children. They settled in Winneshiek, Decorah, Iowa. On April 22nd 1865, Ole bought 40 acres from the government at $1.25/acre. He bought another 40 acres from Aaron Van Auken for $200, and another 80 acres in 1869. Ole took the name 'Bentehauge' after he immigrated from Norway. This was the farm they lived on in Buskerud; it first appeared on his son Ole's 1849 death record. His oldest son Ole O. took 'Bente' as his last name; his other children took 'Bentley' as their last name. Ole's son Halvor and his family (wife and 8 children)lived with them on the farm (see photo). After Ole's wife Mari's death (in 1884, 11 years before him), Ole continued to live on the family farm with son Halvor and family until his death in 1895.
