Olena Wilhelmina Harms was born in Monticello on Aug. 27, 1899, the daughter of Siebelt and Katherine Rickels Harms. She received her early education in the Monticello area. Olena W. Harms and Arthur Steiner were married in June 1919. The couple farmed near Monticello before moving to Hopkinton, where Olena worked as a cook at Lenox College. After the couple moved back to Monticello, she worked at the shirt factory in Anamosa. Olena later worked as a cook at John McDonald Hospital. Mr. Steiner preceded her in death in 1950. Olena moved to Royal in 1980. She was baptized and confirmed in the. Lutheran faith, then joined the Evangelical Reformed Church (Peace United) in 1919, and had been a member until her death. Olena was also a Gold Star Mother. She is survived by one son, Vernon (Pete) Steiner of Monticello; two daughters, Dorothy Kruse of Spencer and Ruth Clement of Phoenix, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, one daughter, four sisters and two brothers. Casketbearers were Paul Black, Richard Black, Robert Lubben, David Lubben, Alan Lubben and Kevin Steiner. Goettsch Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
