She was a native Montanan, born in Columbus on July 30, 1917, to Lewis and Venus , a pioneering family of early Columbus. Olive Virginia lived in or near Columbus all her life with the exception of three years in her youth in Texas. Lewis operated a dairy farm there and in 1926 returned to Montana with his family where he began ranching again near Reed Point. Read More	~~~~~~~~~ Olive Bergland, 96, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013, at a retirement home in Billings. She was a native Montanan, born in Columbus on July 30, 1917, to Lewis and Venus , a pioneering family of early Columbus. Olive Virginia lived in or near Columbus all her life with the exception of three years in her youth in Texas. Lewis operated a dairy farm there and in 1926 returned to Montana with his family where he began ranching again near Reed Point. Olive lived some years in Reed Point and attended school at a country schoolhouse at White Beaver Creek. She had many stories to tell of living in the country, dancing in a community-built dance hall. One of our favorite stories was of her and her sister falling off the horse in a snowstorm while riding home from school. The snow was deep, and Venus was frantic until she finally found them walking home. She married Milroy (Mel) Bergland in 1936 and raised four children while working many years at the Line Drug Company. Later, she was well known for more than 20 years as the City Clerk of Columbus, and earlier as the clerk of the Selective Service. Olive met with her fellow Montana Retired City Clerks every year including this one. She was an active member of the Congregational Church. Olive was a seamstress for many families in the area during her working years and after retirement. She began painting while in her late 60s and became very accomplished. A longtime member of the Eastern Star, she held the office of Worthy Grand Matron and attended meetings until her last years. One of Olive's greatest wishes was to see her favorite cousin, Virginia, again in Texas, and in 1999 she traveled to a long-awaited visit to Texas. In her later years her constant companion was her dog "Snoopy," whom she cherished and spoiled. Olive was preceded in death by her husband and three younger siblings, Lois (Don) Libecap, Kathleen (George) Stimpson, Art (Phyllis) Littlepage; grandson, Nate Bergland; and great-grandson, Derek Wolf. Survivors are her children, JoAnn (Jim) Howard, Millie (Bruce) Clancy, Sandra (Bob) Staples, Ron (Betty) Bergland; and many grand, great- and great-great-grandchildren. The family is planning a spring or summer Celebration of Life to be announced later.
