Johnson Page: Page 29 Text: Oliver Cleveland Johnson, son of Endearing and Nancy (Eaton) Johnson, was born near Castleton, Vermont, Dec. 28, 1818. Like his brothers, he was trained in the rudiments of education at the country schoolhouse near the old homestead and in all the labor of the farm which besides agriculture included a choice flock of merino sheep and combined with it a lumbering business in which the trees were cut, logs sawed and lumber sold from the home place. Oliver's specialty was that of sawyer in his father's mill. At that time all the able bodied men between eighteen and forty were enrolled in the United States militia. Oliver had an aptness for military tactics. When he left Vermont for the West at the age of twenty-four, he had advanced to the office of Captain; his commission, signed by President Polk and his sword are valued keepsakes in his family. February 2, 1843, he married Mary Ann, eldest daughter of the Hon. Alanson K. Wheeler and Sallie Whitlock Wheeler. Their father's farms joined and in after years the good wife confessed that her liking for her future husband began when he used to give her rides on the logging sled drawn by an ox team. The August following their wedding, they started for Illinois with a team and wagon. They arrived at Oswego, Ill., the first week in October. After viewing the surrounding country Oliver purchased 120 acres in the N. W. Qr. of Section 20 in Na-Au Say Township, Kendall County, paying the government price of $1.25 per acre. Here in the Spring of 1844 they settled in a half roofed shanty, in which they had to hold an umbrella over the bed when it rained. On this they lived and died, and in 1896, when the estate was finally settled, it was found that no encumbrance had been placed on that home during all those years. One year after settling in Illinois, Oliver was elected Justice of the Peace, a beginning of a public service in office holding, which lasted until his death. Many marriages were solemnized by him owing to the scarcity of ministers of the Gospel. Those primitive times are illustrated by descriptions of these weddings. Sometimes the groom was married in his shirtsleeves and once, at least, the best man was barefooted. The story of the discovery of God's country went back to Vermont slowly by letters as the postage at that time was twenty five cents. But at length all the land on both sides of the road East from Oliver's first purchase for three miles was owned by relatives from Vermont. Progress was slow. Chicago was the nearest market. As there were neither roads nor bridges, the trip was tedious. Once when they loaded both ways and drove three yoke of oxen, the trip took five and one-half days. That time they got stuck several times and had to carry the load on their shoulders through the slough to dry ground. Oliver cast his first vote for Martin Van Buren running on the Free Soil ticket. At the formation of the Republican party, he identified himself with it and in 1864 was elected to the Legislature. He had a large experience in the Probate courts as Administrator of many estates and guardian of minor heirs. At the time of his death, he was Public Administrator of Kendall County by appointment of the Governor. He was a friend of education. He was identified with the building by subscription of the Union schoolhouse in 1847, which is still in use. For many years he acted as Director or Trustee of Schools and at the time of his death was School Treasurer of Na-Au-Say Township. From a child he had been taught to reverence Christianity. In 1848 a church was organized in the neighborhood in which lie and his wife were two of the eleven original members. Both continued active workers in that organization until their death, preceding which, for more than a quarter of a century, lie held the office of Ruling Elder in the Presbyterian Church. He sought always to love God and his neighbor and died be-loved by a large association of friends. His wife survived him ten years, passing away Oct. 10, 1895.
