Barnes Funeral Service: 2:30 P.M. Tuesday, April 2, 2002 in the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice. Oliver G. Barnes, 88 years of age, of Beatrice, NE. passed away at the Bryan/LGH East Hospital in Lincoln, NE. Friday morning, March 29, 2002. He was born on June 2, 1913 on a farm southwest of Douglas, NE. He and Clara Mueller were married on April 6, 1939. He was in the C.C.C. Corps during World War II. They farmed in the Johnson County and Crab Orchard areas before moving to Beatrice in 1962. He was a custodian and bus driver for the Beatrice High School and was the sexton at the First Presbyterian Church in Beatrice. He enjoyed his grandchildren, hunting, working in his yard, and gardening. Survivors include 2 sons, Gene G. Barnes and his wife Cheryl of Mabank, Texas, and Francis I. Barnes and his wife Nancy of Odell, NE.; daughter Kay R. McCarter and her husband Ernest of Beatrice; 5 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Elijah and May Barnes, 1st wife Clara E. Barnes (1986), 1 sister and 7 brothers. Funeral service will be held at 2:30 P.M. Tuesday, April 2, 2002 at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice with Dr. Jimmy Shelbourn officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen Home Cemetery in Beatrice. The body will lie in state Monday from 9:00-9:00 and Tuesday from 9:00 until the time of the service at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice. A memorial has been established to the American Heart Association with the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel, 708 N. 6th Street, Beatrice, Nebraska 68310 in charge. Messages of condolence may be sent to [email protected] and will be forwarded to the family. The Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice is in charge of services.
