Long occurred yesterday morning from the Christian church at Bethel, and there was a large attendance, among who were many from Richmond. The services were conducted by Rev. E. V. Richmond Daily Palladium, Richmond, IN - October 3, 1901 Oliver Harlan Long -------------------------- Oliver Harlan Long was born in Bethel, Ind., July 15th, 1883, and departed this life September 17th, 1901. aged 18 years, 2 months and 2 days. He has left to mourn his untimely death parents, grandparents and other relatives and a vast concourse of friends. He was buried in baptism into Christ, February 22, 1898. He graduated from the common schools at Bethel in 1897, and from the high school at Whitewater, 1900. In his school life he was always studious and diligent and by his kind disposition endeared himself to his teachers and schoolmates. His life was short but he accomplished a great good and while he would desire that God had permitted him to live with us longer, yet we know the world has been better by his having lived. He was well educated and had the energy to push forward and do what he undertook, and his brief life is an inspiration to his young acquaintances. The world needs young men as he was, but we realize that he who is best prepared to live is best prepared to die. Ollie was a noble Christian young man and had the strength of character to ride above the temptations and vices of his life. He held the love and esteem of his employers and at the time of his death was about to be promoted to a position of responsibility for one so young, and while his family is heartbroken at his sudden departure yet they may justly feel proud of the grand example of his pure life. Only be true and loyal to the sweet influence of his pure Christian life and noble character of young manhood. May God help us to live it. Just as he was entering the years of accountability and responsibilities of a busy world that was opening before him and the care of one of whom to honor was his chief delight he passed away from young manhood to immortal angelhood. When he first came to Richmond he was loyal from first to last. He had not been with us long until we learned to love him. Kind, gentle, loving was his disposition, firm, true to the faith and hope that was planted in his bosom at old Bethel. A willing mind a ready heart for any and all kinds of work. Our S S loses a faithful and consecrated teacher. He labored earnestly in leading young men to their Savior. This young man was a gift of cheer and loveliness to his home, his church and the world with whom he came in contact.
