Read More	Evening times-Republican, Marshalltown, Iowa, March 29, 1918, Image 7 OLIVER HULIN DEAD End Comes to Interesting Career of Old Gilman Resident Death Thursday at Gilman, brought an end to the interesting career of Oliver Hulin, one of the oldest residents of Gilman and a pioneer frontiersman of Iowa and Colorado. Mr. Hulin died of the infirmities of age. He was 88 last August. Mr. Hulin was a native of Montgomery county, New York, where he was born on Augusut 27, 1839. When he was five years old his parents came west to Newton Falls, Ohio, going by the Erie canal and then by ox team. In 1852 Olive pushed on farther west to Michigan, and four years later came to Iowa, with Marshalltown as his objective. He reached Marshalltown when it was a straggling hamlet of a few log and farm houses, and entered the employ of Henry Anson, who then was running the first sawmill in this county. Mr. Hulin had a part in much of the interesting events of the early days here. He helped move the county records from the old seat of government at Marietta in 1859, and helped build the first town hall, which was presented to the county for a court house. In 1858 Mr. Hulin bought up several head of cattle here and drove them to Denver, then a small western mining town. The route was across the Missouri river at Council Bluffs, thence up the Platte. He started a dairy business in the west and in the early 60's bought flour from the LeGrand Mills and freighted it to Denver. The freighting trips were dangerous and Indians were very hostile often attacking Hulin's parties. In 1878 Mr. Hulin came to Gilman. He had prospered in his western ventures and at the time of his death was well-to-do. Mr. Hulin had been twice married. His second wife was Mrs. Elizabeth Gage. She survives together with her four children, Charles, Fred, and Harry Hulin, and Mrs. Guy Carmer, all of Gilman. Another son, Frank [born about 1866 in Colorado], is from his first marriage. Mr. Hulin is also survived by a step-daughter, Mrs. George Clements, and a brother, Kidder Hulin. Added 07 June 2018
