Drew of Richland township of this county, is shrouded in mystery. Not in regard of how the unfortunate man came to his death, but the train of thought and the condition of his mind that led up to the rash act. There is no question in that he voluntarily planned for the deed and carried out his designs with such precision that they almost preclude the thought of insanity. After he was seen in Carroll on August 3, nothing was heard from him until a letter was received by Mrs. Drew, containing draft for $700. The letter was writen at Whiting, Iowa, on August 15 and stated that he had been crazy all summer. He also stated that he would be home soon but did not expect to remain long or words to that effect. Saturday night, Sunday and Monday his family and his father looked for him on almost every incoming train in failing to return arrangements were made to search him out. The tone of his letters indicating that he was not in a normal state mentally. From evidence secured it seems that Mr. Drew arrived at Coon Rapids last Monday evening on a late train. There he secured a liveryman to take him to his home. When they arrived near the little church that is but a short distance from his home he dismissed his driver and walked the remainder of the way. A broken glass at the well indicated that he must have gone there for a drink. In the morning one of his sons found his suit case in the cow barn. His father, W.H. Drew, looked for him but not finding him went to Glidden in hopes that he might learn something of his whereabouts. In the mean time one of the sons went to one of the neighbors, J.J. Brand, and asked him to go to the home with him. Mr. Brand and Paul Walter, who was working for him, went to the Drew home and after searching the out buildings they fonnd Mr. Drew hanging to a rope in the machine shed. It looked as if he had stood on a churn, when the rope was laced about the joice in the building. The churn was kicked to one side which left its victim swinging in the air with his feet a short distance above the ground. He had evidently been dead for some time when he was found as the body was cold and rigid. Other neighbors arrived shortly after and notified Coroner Kelly by telephone and cut down the body and removed it to the house. His wife, Mrs. Drew, was in this city at the time having come here in search of her husband. The Glidden Graphic pays the following tribute to Mr. Drew. Mr. Drew was a fine man, a splendid citizen, a kind neighbor, had no bad habits of any sort, was kind to his family, was a good farmer, was prosperous, had good crops this year, always paid his bills promptly and was honored, respected and entrusted by all who knew him. His death is a matter of profound regret to the whole community. It is far more to the wife and aged father who are heart-broken and to the sons who scarcely yet realized the enormity of their great loss. A coroner's jury was impaneled and an inquest held at the residence. The jury was composed of Warren Dunkle, Dr. J.J. Deshler and W.L. Swaney. The facts developed in the investigation were such as warranted the jury in returning a verdict that the deceased came to his death at his own hands. The funeral was held Thursday at the Methodist church in Glidden Dr. T. McStewart preaching the sermon and were in charge of the Modern Woodmen camp of Glidden of which he was a member. The body was buried in the Carroll cemetery. The funeral was largely attended by relatives and friends.
