Oliver was born on July 21, 1921, at the Pease family log home in Lodge Grass to Ben Sr. and Tillie Whiteman Pease. He was a grandson of the famous Crow Scout "Kaloosh" (Whitemanrunshim) in the Little Big Horn Battle and great-grandson of Fellows David Pease, the first Indian Agent of the Crow Reservation, commissioned by US President Ulysses S. Grant. As a child, he was raised by his maternal grandmother, Horse, and grandfather Ben Spotted Horse in the heart of Crow Country on Rotten Grass Creek. He had a special relationship with his Crow grandparents Bird In The Cloud and Packs The Hat. His upbringing in the shadows of the Big Horn Mountains fostered his lifelong love of hunting, fishing and his respect for nature. At a young age, Oliver was given his Crow name of Awekuhdaaaguush "Known All Over The Land" by Chief Plenty Coups, the last Chief of the Crow Tribe. Oliver was a member of the Newly Made Lodge Clan. He was also a child of the Low Cap Clan of the Hidatsa Tribe as a descendant of Sarah Walker Pease. Oliver was adopted into the Ree Dance Society of the Valley of the Chiefs. He attended the Lodge Grass and Hardin public schools and graduated from Lodge Grass High School. He attended college as one of a very small group of Crow Indians to attend college at the time, first at Bacone College in Muskogee, Okla.; Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore.; the University of Oregon, in Eugene, Ore.; and graduated from Rocky Mountain College in 1949 with a Bachelors of Science in Education. His graduate work was in math and science education and guidance counseling. He played NAIA basketball at Linfield and at Rocky, when the Battling Bears achieved an undefeated season in 1948. He also played football as an Oregon Duck and at Rocky Mountain College. He was one of the first Native Americans to participate at the NCAA Division One level. While student teaching in Browning, Mont., at the Starr School, he met and married Regina Mahala Parker, his wife of more than 50 years. From this union, Oliver and Regina had five children; Olivia, Cynthia, Richard, Oliver Sam and Claudia Lynn. In addition, they raised Shirley and Rodney Skenandore. He was raised as a member of the First Crow Indian Baptist Mission and later became a member of the Church of Christ. He continued his Christian walk throughout his life. Oliver had a lifelong and distinguished career of serving Indian students as an educator in many schools across Indian Country from Minnesota to Washington State. He taught in public schools, Bureau of Indian Affairs Schools, Job Corps, and many summer programs including Upward Bound and Indians into Medicine at the University of North Dakota. At the Inter-Mountain Indian School, Oliver taught with famed Indian sculptor Allen Hauser, whose sculptures presently grace the halls of the United States Congress. He concluded his career as a Director of the Rocky Mountain Region BIA Youth Conservation Corps. After his retirement, Oliver shared his cultural and educational expertise with local schools, colleges and museums including the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, the Western Heritage Center and Montana State University Billings. During his life, Oliver avidly participated in traditional American Indian events, festivals, art shows and powwows in the United States and Canada. He particularly enjoyed the celebrations of the Hidatsa, Northern Cheyenne and Crow Tribes. He was well-known for team dancing with his brother, sons and nephews and instilled in the new generations a long-standing family pride in traditional dance. Oliver's traditional artistic talents included Plains Indian sign language, singing round dance and doorway songs, creating war dance regalia, oil painting and drawing, drum and doll-making. However, he was most well-known for his ability to make and play the Indian flute, a right he received from clan elder Hugh Little Owl. Also, Oliver sang popular and gospel music in his resounding baritone voice, to Native and non-Native audiences. His family and friends remember Oliver as patient, gentle, cheerful, optimistic, loving, and humorous as well as being ambitious, hardworking, intellectual and competitive. He loved and celebrated life throughout his 91 years, leaving his family with a legacy of incredibly fond, rich memories and life-lessons. We are all richer for having known and loved our dad, uncle, brother, grandfather and friend. Oliver was pre-deceased by his parents, his wife Regina, his sisters, Josephine Russell and Bethanneth Iron, his brothers, Ben Pease, Jr., Arlis Whiteman, Paul Spotted Horse; daughter, Shirley Skenandore and nephew, Joel Martin Pease. He is survived by his daughters: Olivia (JohnBill) Sierra, Cynthia Pease, Lynne (Joe) Walks Along, Janine Pease, Linda (Kenneth) Brien, Louella (Frank) Merchant; his sons: Richard (Sheila) Pease, Oliver Sam Pease, Rodney (Gudrun) Skenandore, and Ben III (Kathy) Pease; sister-in-law Margery Pease and special brother Joe Medicine Crow. His sisters in Crow tradition are Ramona (Charles) Realbird, Sharon (Pat) Stands, Angela Russell, and Majel Russell. Oliver leaves 33 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren. He is further survived by the Pease, Whiteman, Spotted Horse, Bull Over the Hill, Small, Stewart, Wallace, Fritzler, Don't Mix and Horn families of the Crow Nation. He is survived by the Walker, Whitman, Fredericks, Young Bird, Mandan, Hall, Chase, Foote, Brugh, Baker, Hale, Bluestone, and Lonefight families of the Hidatsa Nation of the Fort Berthold Reservation. Oliver's family is grateful for the kindnesses and expert care given to him during his six years of residency at the Awe Kualawaache Care Center. Funeral Services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. in the Spirit of Life Church Foursquare Church in Crow Agency. Interment will follow in the Lodge Grass Cemetery. Bullis Mortuary has been entrusted with the arrangements.
