Jefferson Township Pioneer Expired Saturday Night, After Four Days, Illness From Uraemic Poisoning. Oliver Smith, one of the wealthy and highly respected pioneer citizens of Jefferson township, who resided in the south-east part of the county for over fifty years, died suddenly Saturday night, at 9:30, after an illness of only four days duration, from uraemic poisoning. The deceased had never been sick during his life until a week ago, when he began to make some complaint. Dr. Koontz of Roanoke was called in on the Fourth of July and diagnosed his ailment as uraemic poisoning. The aged patient grew worse rapidly and Dr. M. Romenthal of Ft. Wayne, was called Friday, but could offer no hope. His sudden death was a great shock to his family, who were not expecting such a sad event, as the aged man bid fair to live several years yet. The deceased was born March 1st, 1832, near Connersville, Fayette county, Indiana, and was 74 years, 4 months, and 6 days of age. He came to Jefferson township with his parents in 1852, and two years later was united in marriage to Melinda Berry who survives him. Seven children were born to them, all living except one. They are Franklin and Wesley Smith, Mrs. Amon Kelsey and Mrs. Perry Putnam, of Jefferson township, Clarence Smith, of Pennville, Jay county, and Mrs. Morton Gillespie of Ft. Wayne. Four sisters also survive him: Mrs. Nancy Braden, Mrs. Susan Grace and Mrs. Peter Smith, of Jefferson township, and Mrs. Elizabeth Putnam, of Andrews. Another aged sister, Mrs. Margaret Broxon, of Jefferson township, died only a month ago. The deceased was an upright, honorable citizen all his life, one whose word was as good as his bond. He was a consistent member of the Christian church at Saturn and a steadfast republican in politics. He was one of the men whose efforts were lent to the upbuilding of the community and his death will be deeply felt by many friends as well as the immediate family. The funeral took place Tuesday leaving the home at 9:30 a.m. for the Saturn Christian church; Rev. A. M. Gillespie officiating: interment at Sand Bank cemetery.
