Description	:	Ivia was a lady with a heart of gold. She seemed to dominate the scene immediately when she came into the room. After her husband was killed in 1924 in the railroad accident, she raised a large family by herself and this was no small feat. She seemed to dominate the scene immediately when she came into the room. After her husband was killed in 1924 in the railroad accident, she raised a large family by herself and this was no small feat. She was a tough disciplinarian, but also had a heart full of love for life. She loved to go fishing, loved music, and loved to take care of sick people. Just knowing she was in charge made you feel better. She also loved to do crafts, be it sewing, crocheting, or whatever. After her husband died, Ivia did not have any income at the time. Gladys (age 18), Helen (age 14), Howard (age 12) and Marj (age 8) were still at home. We believe that this was at the time that she took in washing. Ivia had to go to the doctor but had no money for treatment. That was when she became a practical nurse. The doctor said that he would train her to become a midwife & practical nurse. Soon after that, he called for her at 3 AM. The kids had to fend for themselves when she was gone - sometimes for days at a time - so she could make a living. As a practical nurse, Ivia was so good that babies the doctors couldn't save they sent to her to care for. She had her own separate pass on the Northwestern Railroad. She spent many days traveling from South Dakota, to Illinois, Iowa, California, and elsewhere to visit family and friends. She always had a compartment for those trips, and would gather all the service men on the train she could find and have a good game of poker for the trip. She kept toothpicks for that purpose – wouldn't let them gamble for money. After she moved to California, she bought a car and drove herself wherever she wanted to go in that crazy traffic. For some time she cared for new born babies for Hollywood celebrities. She would only stay with the family for the first 6 weeks to 2 months. I remember her telling how they would beg her to stay and be the full time nurse, but she preferred moving on to another situation. The last years of her life she spent living with her daughter, Marjorie in Santa Clara, CA. where the family took care of her - a well deserved, happy time in her life.
